The Last Movie You Watched?

A Walk Among the Tombstones - pretty weak. pretty typical sad cop movie.

Lucy - bit of a letdown. most of the good stuff was in the trailer.

November Man - pretty typical spy-type action movie. still enjoyable, by far the best of the three.

THE INTERNET'S OWN BOY - Aaron Schwartz was a computing wunderkind - until he tried circumventing the conventions of electronic publication. His story led to his death, but the debate on public access to information is still very much alive. This documentary doesn't address political issues by referring to "left" or "right"; instead, it's "freedom of information" vs "control." ***1/2 of four

Kingsman: The Secret Service

Hadn't heard of it until my sister suggested we go see it. I thought it was fantastic, and one of the best movies I have seen in a while.

Got to see American Sniper today for free and I thought it was an excellent film. It really pisses me off that so many people call it pro-war propaganda and have no respect for Chris Kyle. Regardless of your feelings on him/the book/the movie, just remember he was murdered while helping out a fellow veteran with PTSD.

I finally, at the age of 40, got around to seeing "Stand By Me."

Wonderful film. It really took me back to my own childhood [emoji5]️

Now that's a movie!

For me and my kids - Rango
Harper Lee wrote 'Go Set A Watchman' in the 50's. It features the character known as Scout as an adult woman. I know how sequels usually don't live up to the original, but I hope it makes 'To Kill A Mockingbird' proud. I'm looking forward to it.

I don't believe that American Sniper is pro-war propaganda, but its point view that's more positive to Chris Kyle and his experiences. And that's fine. As movies, I think Zero Dark 30 and The Hurt Locker taught me more about the US military experience, but different points of view can only be good.

Its filled with Outrageous Stereotypes, Over- and under-acting, too much gratuitous profanity and nudity. Its not porn, its not comedy, its not drama ... I'm not sure what this movie is supposed to be. Maybe its just a parody of itself.

The only one that did a good job in this movie was Burt Reynolds, but as a Hollywood legend with many previous roles under his belt,
I'd expect him to turn in a better performance than the many other nothings and nobodies that filled out the rest of the cast.

I probably would have liked this movie a lot more if I'd seen it on a big screen in a theater. And I would have liked it a lot more if I had gotten really drunk, stoned or coked up while watching it. But I sat through this movie at home, with far too many commercial interruptions, stone cold sober. And it sucked.

It's not accurate to call Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, Don Cheadle, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alfred Molina, John C. Reilly, Heather Graham and Mark Wahlberg "nothings and nobodies".

Indeed.
I also thought Boogie Nights was highly overrated but I've never been more tempted to use "just wow" :)

I think you may have been missing the point of the movie. I think it's an indictment of the porn industry in particular, and the values of the late 70's/early 80's in general. On the surface one might think that a look into the porn industry would be glamorous, exciting, enticing, and arousing with all the sex, freedom and the fun of partying, drink and drugs. Instead, as we are watching this, we are left with feelings of dirtiness, sadness, emptiness, hopelessness, unfulfillment, disgust, loathing, etc., etc. The people who populated the movie formed something which became their family of sorts. Their life choices lead them into the industry expecting the fun and excitement only to eventually be slapped down with feelings of shallowness, emptiness and sadness and the reality of the real problems in their lives which landed them in the porn industry in the first place. I think the over and underacting just amplifies the emptiness, shallowness and lack of substance in what these characters were doing and living.

I think this movie did an outstanding job of capturing the "vibe" of the late 70's/early 80's. They nailed it with the music, look, feel, swagger and the attitude. They captured the essence of the era, they weren't just copying the tokens of the time.

One scene which was memorable to me was when the 3 guys went to that drug dealer's house with the intent to rob him. They are crowded together on the couch, the "muscle" is sitting at the kitchen table doing whatever, the Asian boy keeps setting off firecrackers and the coked up dealer is jabbering away at 100 miles an hour. The scene seems to go on forever and the tension is building and building. We know what's about to go down but we're filled with the dread that it's not going to end well. This scene had its intended affect on me. As the scene progressed, I found myself getting increasingly anxious and tense to the point where it was hard to sit still. I can't really say that it was an enjoyable scene, but it was an effective one.

Ted. I saw the trailer for Ted 2 during the Super Bowl and thought it was hilarious, so I figured I'd better get around to watching the first one.
