YAQI Romulus Polished 316 Stainless AC Blade razor!

Romulus / Feather AC Pro Super

This shave worked out wonderfully! The Super turned the Romulus from a high end of mild razor into a medium aggression razor on the "Razorock scale", still not truly aggressive but noticeably more efficient and for me way more fun. 😊

Thanks for your recommendations, guys! I wonder if I can repeat this wonderful transformation for some other DE razors when using the supposedly slightly wider KAI blades. They have something in common with the Supers, they also cost quite a bit more than the more usual razor blades.

Update to my quirky Yaqi Remus.
I sold it to get a Romulus that would be a better fit for my Razorock thin handle and to get rid of the quirks.
The Romulus arrived today, had a perfect shave paired with Feather Pro blade (works better than Proguard for me, even feels better on my skin).

BUT…let me show you some pictures.

My conclusion is that Yaqi Remus/Romulus has the “fatip syndrome” - it delivers a perfect shave but it has quirks that only 50% of the people see.
I can’t explain why this Romulus delivers such a good shave when the blade ends are not even clamped, there is visible space between the top cap and the blade in the last pic.

@IoanPop the blade might be needed to be loaded for the cap to look straight. AC blades are thick and stiff, that might be enough to straighten the head. I don't hear much with the Romulus, the difference might be that I never looked at it without a blade loaded. It comes by default with an umbranded feather pro or so least very similar blade loaded already, after all.

I have seen your pictures and have come to conclusion that you might be over tightening you razor without a blade in the razor possibly when storing. So I took some measurements with my digital vernier caliber with my Yaqi Romulus razor head and concluded that there is some differences from blade keeper stud height to the pocket depth. Yaqi must of wanted this for strength and eye appeal are my thoughts, it was interesting trying to figure out after your on the 2nd razor and have identical issues + having also have I own a Yaqi Romulus razor to measure from to confirm the issues .

Thanks for analyzing this issue, @Ron R.
Inducing a bend in the cap by tightening the razor, with no blade, is not ideal.

I realize this is a “Yes, definitely” or a “Definitely not” kind of thing but I use M5 nylon washers on every razor whose design allows it. I think that helps prevent over tightening, plus eliminates the handle marks you get on the base plate from metal to metal contact.

I agree wholeheartedly, I never tighten down an unloaded razor.

Thank you for looking into this issue. I had some presumptions like these but I can’t express myself in english when I have to explain things.
I also have an issue with the back “lip” of the base plate, thinking it’s a little too high, more than the thickness of the blade. My Romulus still smiles with a regular Feather Pro, it doesn’t with a Proguard as it is more thick.

Thank you again! This is very helpful. Will keep the blade in.

Is there any compatibility problem using schick P30 blades in excalibur / Romulus head?
No problems with the Schick p30 blades fitting the Romulus! Yaqi made the blade keepers long enough to keep blade in alignment + fits good in my Romulus. I personally like the Kai Captain titian mild blades slightly more after using both blades. Both are good blades (Schick and Kai IMO.)

I've often wondered why I didn't get along with the Schick Prolines............ I mean... the Kai Titan Mild "Pinks" have become my favorite blade... though I love the Kai MG Protouch as well... I just couldn't get a smooth or comfortable shave with the Prolines. I tried 3 different blades... same exact results... I had 3 packages of 30 and sold them at a nicely discounted price to Larry... He loves them.

There doesn't seem to be any reason why they don't work for me.... I mean..... so many people love them and also love the blades I enjoy. It should be reciprocal... I know: YMMV but usually there is a reason. I mean... if you like A,B&C... and I like A&B, you'd think I'd like C as well.

I found the first pass with a Schick Proline sometimes can feel a little tuggy because it is wider in width than a Schick injector blade + cutting longer stubble on 1st pass was my conclusion after using them for sometime in my Yaqi Excalibur. The Schick proline 2nd and clean up passes perform a much better with reasonable longevity IMO). So when Razorock had a sale on the Kai Captain titian mild 50mm AC type blades I bought some. I find Kai steel formulation they use + Kai heat treatment methods for the cutting edge they have nailed it for longevity and comfort in the DE and SE blades IMO. The DE Kai SS blades are wider than a normal standard Gillette blade if readers are not where are great for milder razors.

I just switched from using Proline blades to KAI Pinks in my Vector. So far I'm leaning in favor of KAI. With the Prolines, I felt my shaves were right at the edge of being too close with a slight hint of razor burn on occasion. I was perfectly happy using Proline and if I didn't have some KAI blades on hand, I probably wouldn't have bothered switching. With the KAIs I still get a super close shave, just dialed back a tiny bit. So far no hint of any razor burn either. My stubble returns a bit sooner too, but I'm still at 12 hours when that starts showing up.

I went back over some of my older SOTD post and comments from then still seem to hold true.
