use brorax, its cheap, easy and you can use it to wash clothes.

Yeah, I think I clean it every time. Do you really need more than the lather, a very good rinse and a hard shake?

When you find it doesn't generate lather as well as it once did. I try to do it once every three month or so. Plenty of posts, but you might have to dig a little to find them. The short story is that you can use borax or diluted white vinegar. Give them a soak and then a wash with shampoo. You will be surprised at the difference.
But don't overdo it -- you don't want to turn your favorite brush into a shedder!!
