Rockwell 6s vs 6c

Which baseplates do you utilize?

Ah, the quintessential Rockwell question. It depends on your beard type and how many days you have gone without shaving. I have a reasonably heavy beard that I inherited from my Sicilian grandparents. With my 6S I started out using the 3 plate for all 3 passes, then began to use a 3 plate for the first WTG pass, plate 2 for the XTG second pass and third ATG pass. This served well as a daily pattern. When I found myself with a 3 day beard recently, I used the 6 plate for the first pass, 4 plate for the second pass and 2 plate for the third pass. I had an excellent shave, perhaps the best one yet.

I avoided an adjustable razor for years because it all seemed so complicated. Start on this plate, switch to that plate, just makes my head spin

I can understand where you are coming from--you like a straightforward, uncomplicated approach. For me, though, it make sense. I like to start with a level of aggression that is appropriate for my beard growth. I then switch to a lower plate number (less aggressive) for the next pass to avoid irritation. YMMV.

I like plates #4 and #3 on my 6c. #4 is more efficient, but either works just fine. #2 was quite (too?) mild and I never bothered to try #1 as I can't imagine it doing anything. Maybe I'll get adventurous and try 5 and 6 at some point.

The #1 plate works very well for me shaving against the grain. It feels like it isn't doing anything until you make an against the grain pass and then feel how smooth it left your face.

I contacted Rockwell Razors, excellent service, and they will send me replacement top cap as soon as they have them in stock. Shaving with my 6S is different then with 6C, definitely rougher and less efficient.

Which one is "rougher and less efficient? 6C or 6S?

Both are pretty close to find a noticable difference in the efficiency or the "roughness" - both are equal in their smoothness. A 6C is a good place to start and if you are happy, the 6S would only give added benefit of material and manufacturing process which would make the razor last a life time. Plus the SS version is a bit heavier than the Zinc / chrome version. You'll be happy with either.

In my understanding, reading the post of users that have a 6s/6c I find that depending on the user type the majority uses only 2 plates. It is either a 2/4 or a 3/5. Those that enjoy the plate 6 usually jump to other rasors.

Still having 6 options to find your plates it's a great commodity.

I started with the 3 and today I used the 4. Tomorrow I am using the 5 for WTG, 4 for XTG and then 3 for ATG. I really like having the plates for the different progressions.

Then I am outlier. I have used all six plates, though I have gravitated toward plates 3 and 2 for everyday usage. Still, I like the option to go up to a 6 if I have 3 or 4 days of beard growth. If I have 2 days of beard growth it may be a 4 or 5 plate to start out with. I like to drop down to a 2 for the final two passes. Plate 1 is my least used choice. Having 6 options is indeed a great commodity.

Another outlier here. I’ve settled on the 3 for daily shaves, flipping it over to the 1if I’m going out in the evening and need to do a touch-up. For that purpose, the 1 works well. You may not feel like you’re taking off any stubble, but you are.

Holy Smokes,

Today was my first shave ever with the Rockwell 6c and I started on plate 4 with a new blade Gillette Wilkinson Sword India Saloon Pack

WoW! I dont know if its the blade or the razor but it was one of the best shaves IN MY ENTIRE LIFE after only 2 passes I could not believe how close and smooth it felt. Everything was going so well that I even went "temporarily insane" and decided to shave the throat ATG and the results where FANTASTIC. Even on the bottom right corner that is ALWAYS pink with irritation regardless of the angle or direction I use came out with ZERO irritation. I could not be more impressed.

I had a good feeling about the India wilkinson sword because its sharpness numbers are so similar to Polisilver Super Iridium (my current favorite blade) that I bought a 100 pack of them even before ever trying it before.

Pol-Silver ........46 39 40 42
Wilkinson India 43 40 41 41

Yesterday I had a perfect shave (after a 2 day beard) but today when I tried to shave 24 hours later I got some mild irritation and a couple of bumps. I will try it with plate 3 tomorrow instead of plate 4.

Plate 4 may be too aggressive for daily shaving. But thats whats so cool about this razor that you can make such incremental adjustments. You could even squeeze an extra few days out of a blade that is getting dull by going up to plate 5 or 6 with it.

Im going to give that a shot next week after I join the Excalibur Club.

Disregard my earlier comment, I changed my mind.

Im getting better shaves by shaving every 48 hours using plate R4 (Will try plate R5 also). I just have to concentrate to get a very close BBS (So that the shave will last me 2 straight days). It seems like on my face that 24 hours there is not enough stubble there for the blade to "pick up" and it results in a poorer quality shave (doesnt look as close)

Also seems like girls like that 5 o'clock shadow look you got rocking on day 2, heh-heh

Its just too bad since I like DE shaving so much and want to do it everyday but I have been experimenting and mulling over the matter for months now and 48 hour shaves seem like the best strategy for me. Especially with my 30 minute shaving sessions, cant really spare a half hour DAILY to truly enjoy the shave and the relaxation. The last time I was late to work and tried an express shave I cut myself bad and my throat was pink and raw for the entire weekend (The shave was on a Friday)

If I try to rush my prep I get bad consequences.

Seriously, try plate #2 or #1 for daily shaving. You can do 3 passes and get the same result.

I too can not use plate #4 without at least 3 days growth. Skin is to sensitive ( have to use a Fatboy on 3 or 4 at the highest).

In fact, when I use another razors and get some bad rash and bumps, plate #1 is gentle enough I can shave the next day with no issue.
