Wednesday, March 17, 2010 SAN FRANCISCO -- An ex-vegan who was hit with chili pepper-laced pies at an anarchist event in San Francisco said Tuesday that her assailants were cowards who should direct their herbivorous rage at the powerful - not at a fellow radical for writing a book denouncing animal-free diets.

Lierre Keith, a 45-year-old Arcata resident, was attacked at 2:15 p.m. Saturday at the 15th annual Bay Area Anarchist Book Fair while discussing her 2009 book, "The Vegetarian Myth." A 20-year vegan, Keith now argues that the diet is unhealthy and that agriculture is destroying the world.

As Keith stood at a lectern at the Hall of Flowers in Golden Gate Park, three people in masks and black hooded sweatshirts ran from backstage, shouted, "Go vegan!" and threw pies in her face. While they fled, some in the audience cheered or handed out leaflets.

The attack, midway through a 30-minute talk, was captured on a video posted to YouTube and prompted blistering debates on radical Web sites.

Many people defended Keith - or at least her right not to be attacked. Others said she was dishonest and abusive to vegans and should not have been invited by the event organizer, San Francisco's Bound Together bookstore.

Police are investigating the incident but have made no arrests, a spokesman said. Keith said she did not go to a hospital and was able to speak at a second engagement later Saturday, but had sore eyes for a few days and developed an ear infection.

"The whole thing was designed for social humiliation," said Keith, speaking Tuesday from her sister's home in Kansas. "We're supposed to be against sadism and cruelty and domination, and these people were willing to do this to me."

Keith said her values are similar in most ways to those of her attackers. She believes in militant action, even property destruction, if it can lead to change. In her book, she said, she railed against factory farming and promoted the restoration of prairies and forests.

"It's insane. My entire book is about how the world is being destroyed," Keith said. She said the first pie hit her just after she uttered the sentence, "You should not eat factory-farmed meat."

Among those rejoicing in the pie attack was the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, which often prints communiques from activists taking credit for attacks on animal researchers.

The group said Keith was wrong about veganism, referred to her as an "animal holocaust denier," and scolded her for calling the "agents of state oppression" - the police.

Her assailants were "masked marvels" who "made their statement very eloquently and succinctly on behalf of the billions of animals she advocates killing," the group said.

Keith said the attack appeared to have been planned on Internet sites dedicated to veganism. She called it a case of infighting that harmed activist causes.

"If this is what is considered radical action," she said, "this movement is dead."

This story just proves a theory of mine. People need to have some struggle to survive. Otherwise, society becomes lazy and does stupid stuff like this until it falls. :001_rolle

Bank Robbers Call Ahead for Cash, Get Cops Instead

Two accused bank robbers might have just been trying to save time when they called ahead and demanded that the bank have the cash ready when they got there. But placing and order for cash didn’t get them far.

Albert Bailey, 27, and a 16-year-old, both from Bridgeport, called People's United Bank on Stratfield Road about 10 minutes before they came to rob it on Tuesday afternoon, the Connecticut Post reports.

"You can't make this stuff up," Sgt. James Perez, Fairfield police spokesman, told the Post. "They literally called the bank and said to have the bag of money ready on the floor because they're coming to rob the place.”

Then, true to their word, they showed up – just as police were coming to greet them.

“I would classify these individuals as, 'Not-too-bright.' They should have spent time in school instead of trying to rob a bank," Perez said.

When the suspects called, they threatened to create “a blood bath,” Fairfield police Lt. Thomas Mrozek told the Post.

Fortunately, there was no bloodbath. The suspects did not use a weapon.

Bailey waited in a parked car while the 16-year-old, who was not identified because of his age, picked up the bag of cash and walked out, the Post reports.

It was not difficult for Fairfield Officer Michael Guilfoyle to find the youth because the bank described him. As Guilfoyle tried to take the teen into custody, the situation got even worse by the dye pack exploding. Then, more police showed up so cops were able to nab both suspects before they left the parking lot.

Both robbery suspects were charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree threatening. The 16-year-old was sent to an area juvenile jail, police said.

Bailey was on probation for robbing a People's Bank branch in Bridgeport in 2003, the Post reports, and was held without bond to be turned over to the Department of Correction.

Okay time to revive this thread! :w00t:

Sunday, August 29, 2010, OAKLAND COUNTY, MI -- For the second time this month, a woman has lost a finger in a boating mishap on Cass Lake, and police say both incidents occurred aboard the same pontoon boat.

Keego Harbor Police Marine Patrol responded to the medical emergency around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, finding a 22-year-old woman whose finger was severed as she attempted to jump off the boat. Police did not indicate where the woman lives.

The boat was moored to the sandbar on Cass Lake at the time of the incident.

Police helped the woman to shore, where she was met by West Bloomfield Fire and Rescue crews before being transported to POH Regional Medical Center.

The victim was listed in stable condition.

Alcohol may have been a factor in the incident, police said.

A 24-year-old Shelby Township woman lost a finger in a similar mishap Aug. 13. While jumping off the same pontoon boat that was involved in Saturday’s incident, the woman’s finger got stuck on the boat and was severed between where it attached to her hand and the next knuckle.

It was not clear if the fingers were able to be reattached in either instance.
