It's May 1 which traditionally marks the beginning of B&B's annual Gold Dollar Mod Competition. We haven't checked for interest ahead of time but hopefully a few straight razor shavers, or those wishing to start, have procured a Gold Dollar straight razor ready to turn it into a thing of beauty. For the curious, let me explain what this is all about. Gold Dollar makes some inexpensive straight razors in China. Out of the box they don't shave particularly well but inside they have plenty of good steel. The scales are made from very cheap plastic. Enterprising modders throw away the scales and create new ones from a variety of material. The blade itself usually needs some grinding to make its geometry ready for efficient shaving. Along the way people create unique designs of stunning beauty. You may check out our past competitions for inspiration.
The rules are simple. The construction phase starts today and ends on July 1. Please limit your entries to new work that you created during these two months. We’ll start the competition threads on July 1. Please post pictures of your finished razors then. Entries must be shave ready in order to be considered. B&B members at large will vote to select the winners in each category. In the meantime post pictures of your progress in this thread and tell us how you are doing.
