Softening bristles and pH/alkalinity

I use Gillette shaving gel (I know!). Is hhaving gel responsible for softening the bristles or is that done by the preceding face wash?

I wash my face using a mild hair shampoo as it is more gentle. I mean the sort based on sodium laureth sulfate, etc.

I wonder if I should rely more on the face washing or the shaving gel to soften the bristles further. Any thoughts?

IMO the term, ‘traditional wet shaving,’ describes what I am trying to accomplish!

I want hydration of my skin, beard and lather. For me optimal hydration is the key! :popc::popc:

Exposure to warm water for several minutes is the best thing.

The study found that various pre-shaves were no more effective than water, and the pH of the shaving medium was not significant.
That looks like a useful study. Thank you.

Is there a way to download a copy as a pdf?

I'm having to view it on a screen and that makes it hard to mark important points.

If the pH of shaving gel or cream makes no difference to how soft the bristle gets, then what's the point of the alkaline PH which these products have?
