What's new

Super Iridium blades

About 2 months. I've just used an Astra Superior blade with great results, no problems whatsoever and using the same safety razor.
Are you using the Muhle R89 (new design) razor?

Yes I am using the new design of the Muhle razor(a.k.a. "new Muhle 2009 head").
I had great results with Iridium blades both in the R89 and R106 Muhle razors.

I remember I tried the Astra in the Merkur HD razor, but it was really rough..
My next blade that I will try in the Muhle razors is the Astra!

What razor are you using?

I had a shave with an Iridium Super this morning. It was a fine, fine shave no doubt. Obviously among the best. Very close and no irritation as I am accustomed to. I'll keep it in the razor and test it out over the next few shaves.

I used it, as I do all my blades, in a Merkur sledgehammer slant. The weight of the razor and the angled head make shaving almost too easy. I think this razor can make ALMOST any blade shine.

Man, once you get to the top it's really hard to discriminate between blades. I find the top 4 or 5 blades for me have more similarities than differences. It really becomes splitting hairs to compare them.

I'm using the Muhle R89 (new Muhle head) safety razor as well. A friend of mine tried Iridium too and he didn't liked, he said the shave was rough and cutted the face. Like I said in the previous post, Astra is much better for me, very smooth. But I still have another 5 different blades to test :biggrin1:

I used only one Iridium blade so far (in a Merkur 34C), and my experience is not so bad. The first two shaves ended with many cuts and some razor burn, but the next two were pretty decent. The reason? Applying next to no pressure. I was getting used to the "blank Personnas", and those blades are quite forgiving. The Iridiums are much sharper and demand your respect :biggrin1:.

In my case I had no cuts, but the blade seemed to pull the hair instead of cutting it and also it didn't glided on the skin, felt like it was getting stuck.

So I beleive that YMMV thing is true after all
I think that the differences are due to our different techniques. Many people, many styles of shaving. There are quite some variables. The way you hold the razor, the way you make the strokes, blade angle etc...

I just had a good shave with the iridium(used x5 so far). they are MY "to go" blade.
I hope you find your best blade for the Muhle R89. And make sure you leave the feather for last. By then, you will have a better technique. And when you get consistent shaves, go back and try the Iridium again, or other blades for that matter.

Cheers,

Tiberiu

Hello,

I bought at the same time a package of astras and one of the iridiums. I find astra more cutting, and a little less soft. The problem, it is always these horrible points of glue. On the blade which I took out this morning, the glue overflowed up to the sharp edge, what makes that I have of to use the other side of the blade.:thumbdown

Yes.. the russian glue spots are quite annoying! :thumbdown

Phil at Bullgoose sent me a pack of ten Iridiums along with a razor I bought from him. I've been rotating them along with Feathers and 7 O'Clock Yellows for a few weeks now. The Iridiums are terrific - I can't quite make up my mind which of the three I like best. Though I suppose that's not a bad problem to have!

When I run through this pack, I'll be ordering 100 more from Phil.

Yes, they are indeed terrific!!
Lately I wanted to know if there is better blade than Iridium. The Feather blade is sharper and cuts closely than the Iridium. But only for 1 or 2 shaves. After that it is a real pain to shave with a Feather.
But the Iridium gave me the smoothes, and enjoyable shaves to date.
Plus they last more than the rest!

I want to post a new interesting thread between two types of Iridiums!!! I have 2 packs of Iridiums that have different packages. Subtle differences but still.
I want to compare the two types. I don't know if there are any differences.
But I want to take some photos first!
Please be patient friends..

I ordered 2 weeks ago a pack of 10 blades Iridium, because everybody says so much good about it. I was rather disappointed. I find that they do not cut enough. For example, I use Astra Platinium and 7o'clock yellow clock, and I find them much superior.

Nobody can garuantee that the blade will work for everybody! Sorry to hear that.
You might try it again sometimes, or perhaps in a different razor.
But hey, look on the bright side. You only bought a pack of 10. Good that you didn't go and buying bulk.

I have very good results with Iridium. And one of the worst blades were the 7o'clock Yellow pack. Didn't like them too much.

YMMV for sure.

I agree with you, the Super Iridiums are my favorite. I have about 500 of them now :) I have heard that they are not in production anymore, is that not true? My normal source does not stock them anymore.

Yup, Iridiums are not produced anymore. I first discovered this on Bruce on Shaving, but I've seen it on this forum and in several other places as well.

Sadly I'm not in love with Iridiums either. No cuts but man it took way too much effort, dragging, missed stubble everywhere even after multiple passes. I like current production Russian Yellows and Blues way better and they're cheaper...

I just received a 100 Iridiums and had my 3rd shave with them last night. I found them to be a bit sharper and smoother than my go-to blade, Red IP. If the blades were readily available, I would make them my go-to. But since they are not, I'll ration what I have and stick with the Red IPs.
