What's new

RazoRock Merkur 34c HD clone in 316L has arrived

I received mine on the 28th this morning gave it ago tried a new Personna Lab blade in my razor on four days of growth, lathering up with my B&B Essentials brush and Proraso Green. Arko or a less filmy soap would've been better for cleanup. The razor is mild with minimal blade feel maybe due to over-lathering but had some audible feedback during touch-ups. Not sure I like the lack of blade feel compared to my 34C. Next time, I’ll test it with my older HD handle for comparison. hopefully sometime get my weber bulldog handle to try

Ok, you all talked me into it:eek2: I ordered my GOAT today. Yet another RR handle to add to my collection. I am looking forward to using the GOAT and I like the look of the hollowed handle.

Edit: I am participating in All Vintage April so I will not try out the GOAT until May.
I have the GOAT and the BBS on the way.... I'm not sure I'll be able to hold out until May... We'll see... I did have a great first Vintage April shave this morning....

The bbs oc is one of my favorites!
I've been shaving with the GOAT all week and the honeymoon isn't over. Flawless shaves. I'm going to experiment with some heavier handles just to see the difference.
I'm getting the OC and the A base plates with the BBS cap.... I suspect the OC will be my favorite, as the RR SuperSlant L2++OC is wonderful for me....

I have super hard stubble, I have to shave daily, prefer positive blade exposure and razors that are on the more aggressive side and I don't do ATG!
With that said, the current (neutral base plate) offering is more than sufficient for me and will probably never upgrade
to the future + or ++.
This might look like a 33 or 34 but that's where the similarities end!
But I get it if you want much more blade feel and I guess some more efficiency (even though it's as good on efficiency
as any of my top shelf razors when it comes to that!)
@LRod

Impressive review Larry! As you know I like high efficiency razors, ie Blackbird Ti, Rocnel Elite 2023 and Nodachi Ti. . . how do you compare it to these razors? Do I need to wait for + plate? Is it as mild as Overlander, Bison or 3One6?

Sorry it took a while to respond. I had to think about this one!
I'm the same so our tastes match!
I've never tried a 3one6 or a Bison so can't give a comparison with those.
I tried the Overlander and it wasn't sufficiently efficient. So nothing like the Overlander! The GOAT is more efficient!
Not like the Blackbird, the Blackbird is more aggressive and a tad more efficient.
Probably equal to the '23 Elite in both smoothness & efficiency but a different shave feel since the Elite has a larger gap.
The Nodachi is one of my favorites but I honestly don't think it's mega efficient. It's just right!
I'd say the GOAT is maybe around the same efficiency as the Nodachi!
It's different from all of these though. It feels mild during the shave but it's definitely efficient!
Hope this helps!!

Thank you Larry! You eloquently answered my questions. I’m really surprised that it’s as efficient as Nodachi and Rocnel Elite 23’. I hold both those razors in high regards. So in your assessment its more efficient than a regular 34C, like you said earlier.

Many thanks, Have a great weekend!

You're welcome!
More efficient than the old 34C for sure!
From what I read the 34C was recently redesigned so I can't compare it to the new one since I've never tried it.
Have a great weekend as well!

In my experience I'd say the GOAT is more aggressive than the 3one6, but I haven't use the 3one6 for some time.

I've read the comments here, and to me they only confirm that RazoRock does a great job of producing well-made "homage" razors based on classic designs, at least visually. However, these homage razors do not necessarily shave like the originals, nor are they intended to. Based on the comments here, it seems this one is no exception. Well-made, but a much more modern approach to geometry.

Exactly why the F/A-18 Super Hornet does not fly like the Wright Flyer (aka the 1903 Flyer) but it sure is a great tribute to it.

Joking aside, sometimes the original is a tough act to follow, which makes them all the more precious. The main draw to the GOAT is that it is made of SS and is 3-piece versus a 2-piece brass and cast zinc alloy.

Different strokes for everyone.

Based on the comments a noob wants to know, how much are you guys shaving by not buying cartridges? (Rhetorical question alert!)

I am broke, and yet I want to buy and try so many things, including this razor.
I did start down the DE razor path to save money but it quickly became an obsession. 140 razors later I'm still increasing den size. One of the ways to try before you buy is a passaround. I was on a Timeless razor passaround before I discovered they're one of my favorite modern razor manufacturers.

I personally know of only 1 person who has saved money wetshaving. He's a son-in-law, who began wet-shaving before me, and is not a member. He still only uses his first DE, a Merkur 34 with Feather blades. I've gifted him better brushes & soaps over the years, but we rarely talk shaving when we get together. Our conversations are more about old films and books.
