LRod's Acquisition and everything else Thread!

The RADMAN, RADMEISTER, RADSTER, The DAD of RAD, The Prince of Purchase, The Beethoven of Buying, The Ace of Acquisition, The Sheik of Shopping, The Professor of Procurement etc...I could go on, but suffice to say, you provide us with lots of entertainment and reviews. I'm here for the "Wait, what...you bought something else"? I'm also waiting for you to think about combining your next 4 or 5 purchases together and springing for a Taedalus.

I don't know about the Tedalus even though you all say it's great. Something about spending that much on a razor makes it prohibitively expensive for me. I know I've spent much more but for that price I get to try a few razors at once.
I think that's why I haven't bought one yet!

69 razors at average price of what, like $200?

You know I like Timeless and Blackland Razors, right? If I had to choose between giving up all 4 Timeless TI razors or giving up the Tedalus, I'd be sad, but I'd keep the Tedalus. Same for the three Blackbirds.

Manuel might cut you a break if you bought two... ;)

I get it man trust me!
Maybe some day!
And it's 68 now. One sold yesterday! ;)

Here's a more realistic count which I just looked at (which I guess is good to know for my RAD sanity):
Out of the 68, around 13 are over $100.
Around 10 are over $200!
The rest are well below $100 and
17 of the 68 are vintage which I mostly paid peanuts for those with the exception of the
Gillette Sheraton.

My problem is that I like almost everything I have. I'll eventually sell some of them, but there aren't many I want to part with. A sell off of say two of my four Superslants, the Greencult 1.1, my TI Timeless Slim and my Stainless Tatara Nodachi with OC Masamune plate collectively wouldn't cover the WR3 I'm thinking about

Why do you think I have so many?
Like you, I've reached a point that I like alot of what I have and the expensive ones are mostly the ones I like best.
The cheaper ones wont cover most of what will eventually be on the horizon.
If you want a WR3, the ones you mentioned would at least cover a portion of the cost.
I'm guessing you want one of the "high ticket" WR3's though!
Sometimes my sales don't cover everything and I end up footing the difference if I really want something!

Yep.

Second incredibly fantastic shave with the Hone Type 15 Bronze!
I'm gonna call this razor "The hidden Gem". It deserves that title!
First the bad news:
I decided to experiment with a Kai blade. These were supplied to me by our super generous
@BigAlVista (Mark!)
Unfortunately the Kai's never work for me regardless of the razor. They're either subpar on some razors
or just plain bad in others (for me!) On the Hone, they're the latter! Sorry Mark!
First stroke and it was like shaving with rocks. I immediately felt my skin react negatively!
So I stopped and did a quick blade change to an Astra SP (my original plan that I should've followed from the beginning).
Now the good news:
The rest of my 2 passes were as good as it gets!
I used some Arko which is super slick and gripped the razor on the neck where the center of gravity is
and what a shave my friends!
That perfect shave that makes you smile while you're shaving!
Beautifully mild and plenty efficient for a perfect face feel with only positive results.
I can't vouch for the stainless or the old brass one since I've never owned those.
And can't either for the aluminum since it gave me some major drag during shaves.
But man oh man is this Bronze one special!
An absolutely wonderful creation.
Nope, nope, nope, it ain't going anywhere!!
Note: These are my results so YMMV! 🙂

No need to apologize, Larry. For me, the purpose of the Kai (and it's only virtue), is that it can increase the exposure (because it's a bit wider than most blades) of an inefficient razor. If I recall, when I sent them to you, you were trying to figure out whether to keep your Blutt, and we were experimenting to see if a bit more blade exposure would help.

The Amakuni arrived!
Looks great (Tatara quality) with a simple & functional design.
It came with the Masamune Box that's got a Amakuni label on it (others here have received the same thing).
Either they had a shortage of Amakuni boxes or this was a first issue box. Doesn't matter to me since the box isn't a problem for me.
At least the razor is from a late batch since it's got the Torx style screw that holds the base plate & handle together!
The top cap magnet thing seems to do it's job, tolerances are tight and the razor itself feels comfortable & balanced.
Hoping it gives a good shave since the AC format has been my least liked throughout the journey.
As of now I've only got 3 AC's (Amakuni, Shield Brass & Razorock aluminum Hawk).
YourShaving also included a shaving soap as a free gift (same as they usually do).
It's a Dutch soap that's called De Vergulde Hand, I've never heard of it but I opened it up and it
smells pretty good. Maybe @Guido75 can chime in on this soap?
I've loaded a Schick Proline blade and will give it a whirl tonight:

Looks nice! Looking forward to your review. Except for a Leaf Twig I don't own any SE razors. Except for having a smaller/ narrower head what is the advantage of a SE over a DE? Easier for trimming?

The advantage depends!
It's not just the slimmer heads (even though the AC blade is wider), it's also the rigidness of the blade. The AC & GEM don't have the flexibility that the DE blades have. Some people like that and get better (or different) results. Because of the rigidity, you use them at a very shallow angle (almost totally parallel to your face). Kind of the same way that you'd shave with a straight!
It's just a different experience!

First shave tonight with the Amakuni using a Schick Proline blade!
I'm impressed, actually thrilled!
This is the first AC razor I've had that I've really really liked.
The Claymore was good and so was the ATT X1 but the size is what always didn't put them
in the top spots. I also have the Shield AC razor in brass which is essentially a clone of the Blackland
Vector. Again, good but not great and it's because of the over slim head combined with the wide format which
makes it feel awkward. None of them fully checked every box and it seems like the Amakuni does!
It's super balanced, the razor is the right size, the head is also the right size (not to big & not to small) and
the magnetic top cap system is wonderful since it makes blade loading a breeze.
And to top it off, it gives a wonderful shave!
It's very smooth, medium aggressive (not a ton of blade feel) and the efficiency is perfect.
It's an excellent & safe feeling razor that can be used daily.
The guys at Tatara have built something special and I commend them for that.
I'm very happy that I took the plunge with this one since I didn't know what to expect.
I was skeptical when it first came out because of the AC format and the magnets and initially ignored it
till I saw the great deal that YourShaving had.
I'm glad I did!
It's fantastic and I give it an A++
@BigAlVista (Mark), I think you're gonna like yours!
And not to enable, but I think @Phoenixkh (Kim), you'd like this razor considering your preferences,
likes & history with the Claymore.

Is it swell time?
Larry! Congrats on the new Tatara! And what a nice gesture from Yourshaving.

Vergulde Hands is most likely the oldest soap company in the world. Founded in 1554.

The scent of barbershoppish is ingrained in my childhood memory. Available in any supermarket or drugstore imaginable (next to only Palmolive cream and Gillette canned goo). The eucalyptus version is harder to find as that’s only available with certain stores. Embossed logo in the soap for that extra bit of luxurious feeling.

I am sure the ingredients have changed over time. At the moment it’s a vegan soap using palm oil as its main base. It’s also a (very) hard soap. That said as you will find it lathers super easy (blooming is not necessary but if you do you can paint the bathroom). Excellent slickness. Post shave is alright too although it can be a little dryer (that topical soap dryness).

Enjoy!!

Thanks for the info. Guido, I figured you'd know!
Sounds like a nice soap and amazing history there!!
I like the scent and the embossed logo does make it look expensive.
I yet to use it but will put it in this week for one of my shaves.
