A Good Slick Cream

@petr

i have used Wlikinson blades, Feather Blades, Gillettee 7 o clclock what makes soaps better to use then creams? What soaps do you recommend?

@ricardo9505

I will try the preshave oil and making it myself:)

yes try the preshave oil. Most bang for your buck. Forget the TOBS. Almost all are the same. I have the benefit of a pharmacy in the city that carries most of the TOBS scents so I just whiff away. But for a beard man I gotta suggest soaps. Harris is just superb and worth every penny. I love the lavender soap.creamy and the scent is always a hit. unlike some which are hot or miss. It's just very natural ..
I truly hope u find those 2 or 3 creams/soaps that work well for you. remember to change the blade. I cannot stress enough how important a good blade and technique is to a shave. the soap/cream is the last thing to worry about. well, the brush is actually but ...

@ricardo9505

Thank you for the recommendation. I do have a tough beard and I use a new blade each time I shave. What is a good blade to use? What DR Harris soap do you suggest? And how do I care for my blade so I can use it more than once? I use a Silvertip badger brush. And a Merker 34C. Do I need another brush or razor? How can I improve my technique?

So your routine is:

Aftershave balm
WTG
ATG
Re-wet
Diagonal ear to jaw
Diagonal jaw to ear
ATG again
60hz lawnmower
Alcohol or witch hazel
Cold water shock
More alcohol in the form of cologne

Good lord man, you actually have skin left over after all that? On a daily basis? I think your biggest obstacle to a smooth shave is all this torture your skin is having to endure. You just need fewer passes and fewer chemical treatments. It's hard to say what will work for you, but I think it's easier to see what doesn't work.
Agreed! That's probably too much for your skin. I for one have very sensitive skin and often times I will only do 1 WTG pass, sometimes 1-WTG and 1-XTG. Any more than that and my skin gets angry. No ATG for me at all. Might try changing it up a bit. I know that the 3 pass system is very popular among many modern wet shavers but many professional barbers consider the ATG pass poor technique and don't do it at all.

@richardo9505 and @KuckyMan

I used extra virgin olive oil yesterday for my pre shave along with hot water a Feather blade and some AOS Lavender and got an excellent shave. I didn't even have to use the electric shaver that much as I did before. Just a few touch up areas! I'm going to order the DR Harris Arlington soap from amazon.com is that good or better then the DR Harris Lavender or another soap scent? What about the Proraso sandalwood? I like the AOS Sandalwood. Any good lemon scents? Thank you for your help!

Jerry

I see lots of high-end creams listed, there are quite a few good creams in the $7 to $11 range. All forms of Proraso (green, red, and blue), La Toja (in both Classic & Sensative), Musgo Real, Euro Palmolive Classic, and Italian Palmolive Menthol. All have been great performers for me. I'm not knocking the high-end stuff, just throwing a few more options out there.

Also, as others have said, your routine sounds a little hard on your face. Sometimes less is more.

Oh, and drop that electric razor like a hot potato! Keep focusing on getting a good shave with a blade, and you won't need it anymore.

I've really liked Taylor of Old Bond Street -- of course I think what you have sounds nice too.

I am currently trying out TOBS (I used Lemon and Lime). The first two shaves were lackluster, the razor tended to skip and stick to my face. For the third shave I tried an insane amount of water (a brush soaking's worth plus about four tablespoons to an almond sized dollop) and found the cream was luscious and protective. I also had at least another passes worth of lather when I was done shaving and washing my face. Moral of the post is don't be stingy with the water using TOBS.

For the new user I would also recommend using trial size containers of the 3T's before purchasing a full-size tub. Connaught sells 10ml vials of TOBS and DR Harris, Truefitt and Hill will sell you a sample pack on their own website and I think Trumper's does as well. Garry's Sample Shop (check the vendor section) is another good source but he varies his stock so he may not have all four to choose from at the same time (if you were so inclined). As of today Garry has TOBS samples in several varieties. I can't say what he would do but if you were inclined to purchase the other brands you could mention it in your PM to him (or in your order comments if you choose Connaught). If 20 people ask for (let's say for the sake of argument) Trumper's he might be willing to buy a few tubs and make up samples. You don't know until you ask. If nothing else Garry selling 20 samples of a cream at 1/4 ounce each would pay for the tubs and make him a couple of bucks ($1.50 X 20 is $30, a tub of Trumper's is in the low $20's currently and would make up about 40 samples ($60 in my example), multiply that by people buying 3-5 different varieties samples, you get the picture). This is how he makes his living anyway, I would have to guess he sells 200 plus samples a day (probably a slow day).

When I was younger I used Noxema to soothe a sunburn. It actually worked quite well. I don't get sunburn anymore (I don't spend ten hours a day out in the sun sans shirt very often nowadays) so I haven't had to use it in years but if it still soothes a sunburn it should soothe and soften a face. Maybe I should buy a tub and try it as a pre-shave myself.

I used it again this morning. BBS with no shower beforehand and no razor burn.
