Cutting board oil

I am making cutting boards for Christmas gifts this year and wondering what I should oil/protect them with. The have decided on mineral oil yet I have seen many say add beeswax to the oil. What are your opinions?

Second, I saw a wood burner at Harbor Freight and thinking I should write/burn something into them. Suggestions?

Mineral oil is all you need.

Mineral oil to start_you can make up a butter of mineral oil and beeswax to touch up and finish. Adding a tin of this to the gift would be appreciated I would think.

as far as wood burning, I bought a wood burning letter set from Hobby Lobby for a project I did and it worked quite well with a little practice, and with the 40% off on-going coupon that hobby lobby always has, it is reasonably priced I think.

+1 Write the persons name on the side of the board with the burning kit. Plus, sign your work with your signature.


Dad made this for me back in February. I still don't have it...haven't been to his house for awhile. Now that I see yours I may need to make a road trip.

That would be fantastic. I wouldn't be in, as I have been far too lucky here, but someone would definitely love it.

I've used Walnut oil as a finish on cutting boards before with good results.
