Ever Ready Streamline Differences (Pic Heavy)

This was done once a few years ago and I thought with all the new SE guys on here, they may want to see the 2 different types of streamlines. First are pics of 2 of my streamlines (hey, I gotta show off a little-I love these guys). BTW, I am not a very good photographer...please be gentle.

It appears I have maxed out my pics just showing a little razor porn so the next 5 in my next post will show the differences in the razors. Bear with me..first time I have posted something this big.

For purposes of our discussion today, I am simply going to name one old and one new. I have no idea which is older and which is newer or if they were concurrant. I just see the new one a lot more than the old one. On to the pics. The old one is to the left in all pics.

Below, you can see old one has fewer teeth and they are spaced farther apart.

The pin holding the head on the old one is bigger. Also the neck of the razor on the new one is thicker than on the old one.

The back of the old one is markedly different in that the spring loaded tab for the blade splits it in half whereas on the new one, it is solid all the way across.

The old one has 2 huge holes in the blade bed for the lather to exit and none by the head of the blade whereas the new one has much 2 smaller holes and a series of small holes by the head of the blade.

And the last shows the much thinner neck on the old one compared to the thicker neck on the new one. There is also a small bridge of metal at the head of the old one to reinforce the head to the neck (this can be seen in the 2nd side pic above as well). Maybe by making the neck thicker on the new one, they were able to get rid of this.

There you have it. My little study in the differences of the ER Streamline razor. Hope this helps.

Were they only made in 1952 and 1953?

BTW, great pictures. Thanks for posting them

Nice post, thanks! So, in the case that holds two items, the one on the right is a "stropping machine"? I had no idea they made these for "disposable" SE blades!

I'll bet you there are (or now were) very few people alive today who would have known that. I've got a Streamline "New". Thanks for that.

The target audience must have been the truly frugal.

I think the blades of the era were still carbon steel. I suppose you could squeeze out a few more shaves by stropping.

Thanks for sharing, I had no idea there were two versions of the "Streamline". I just checked mine and it is the model that you labeled as the "new one".

Thanks for the nice replies. I do not know dates of manufacture on these but I will defer to Alex and Waits Compendium. I did find the following 2 ads on the web from 1953 and 1950 so they probably made them for a little while like the 1912's and MM's. I have not noticed a difference between the 2 of them when shaving. The only difference is a slightly cleaner blade with the old one as it has more room for the lather to exit.

As you seem to be the Streamline oracle, I've got an original Corrux blade if you want it Shavinbacon. It's untouched and was in my razor when i bought it. Just PM me with your postal address and I'll put it in an envelop. I was just going to give it a try but I'm not too fussed.

I appreciate the offer but I have several NOS British blades and blades that were in these when I bought them. You can either keep it for your collection or you can use it.

I don't consider myself an oracle but I thank you for your kind words. I surfed this site way too long before signing up and benefited from a member here named D.Irving79. Now HE was a SE guru. He even started his own website devoted to SE's. Alas, he has not logged on since last July and I think his website disappeared but if you really want to learn some things about SE's..look up his posts. I inquired about him but no one seems to know what happened to him.

these were in ad were american not british New Chrome Strop Outfit 1931 and (New )improved Eveready from 1930..sears had them til 1931, the blades were carried til 1947.

The ads are British. Boots, Timothy White's, chemists? Nobody in America would know where to buy them from those ads.

And if you had looked a little farther in Waits, you would see the 1950s ever-ready in a blue box.

That's a sad story. Whatever happened to D.Irving79? The Corrux blade actually looks very corrugated. Very different to the SE blade I use now. Don't know if that was the intention of the name Corrux. I'm sure D.Irving79 could have enlightened us.

I was looking through Waits Safety Razor Compendium because I was getting confused on the dates. The Streamline strop set showed up in 1930 probably with the single razor set as well. Pretty spot on information from Alex2363. But the single razor set pops up again around 1950. That's kind of interesting.

Did the razor go away for 20 years to be resurrected in the 50s? That might explain the differences in the two razors. I wouldn't think they would make such dramatic changes just in the two year 1930s production run.

It would explain their relative scarcity too. One would think that if it were available through all of those years, we would see more of them.
