One of the greatest privileges I have had in life has been to serve. I had amazing training that gave me skills that transferred to my civilian work, as well as benefits that allowed me to complete my education. I worked with some amazing people in the military. I may have benefited more than I sacrificed.

I can't say my years in the Navy were any kind of sacrifice, really. I traveled the world and had amazing adventures. I helped others less fortunate, and grew and matured as a person in so many ways. I feel I gained far and away more than I offered.

I'm not normally a sentimental sort of guy, but I'll never forget my mom's tears when seeing me for the first time after having enlisted. After boot camp I had my first overseas deployment so it had been several months... "You're not my baby anymore!"
