The in between pass splash also helps to get rid of any cream you have hanging out in funny places, like ears and such. At least it works for me.
This is one reason I like to rinse. Besides keeping lots of moisture and water on the skin and beard, it lets me know exactly where I need to concentrate my shave efforts.
