Yes, those are stabilized burl walnut scales...it's a gorgeous razor and has some heft in the hand, which I think made it easier for me to make smooth, steady strokes.
 
Used a new 50mm swedish steel iwasaki kamisori this morning.

After 3 shaves, beginning to think it's sort of a "it was nice to try it, but not my bag" kind of thing and it will probably exit as quickly as it entered.
 
Dusted off Ebony on Ivory and used a new soap/oil my wife picked up for me at a beauty supply house called Crew. And you can see the rest.
