What's new

Turkish Horse

I have two of these and the hairs have split which is the tell tale sign of boar hair.

My horse hair brushes have not over the same time period.

Melyus and the OP are correct, this is a boar brush.

Are you absolutely sure they are boar? Because if so, then I'll have to throw all mine away. I bought all the brushes from bestshave.net except the #5.

Lying bastard should stop selling them as horse.

Would be awesome if someone could send samples to a lab to verify...

I'm certain enough that I would recommend any of my Jewish or Muslim friends to avoid this brush. That being said I went back to Bruce's site and he has a further review of this brush specifically and he states quite emphatically his is horse. He certainly has more experience than I, but his pictures also look different. Maybe they sent him horse and the rest of us boar.

Not trying to flame the fire at all here but I am curious if you tried contacting them to change the description on their site? Sounds like you are pretty passionate about this issue.

I have. I hope they understand English enough to realize I am not looking for a refund or anything silly like that. I just would like them to update the description

Okay here are some pictures of this brush compared to my Vie-Long Ivory Beehive in Natural Horse (which is apparently due a cleaning):

I apologize for the poor quality of the pics. Incidentally, both of these knots are advertised as 25mm. You tell me if you see any difference.

I thought I would add that sometimes pics don't show the whole story. On the back of my had or on my face the Vie-Long is very noticeably softer. The BestShave is a lot closer in feel, softness, backbone, to my boar brushes. When someone figures out a way to have "feel" on a web page ... well, the porn industry will do it first I am sure.

A final observation: In a subsequent post, Bruce says "rand new you can tell it is horse hair by the smell." This brush has very little smell. I have a pretty good nose, I'm a beer judge and my schnozz has a proven pedigree there. This brush is very clean smelling.

When the postage to get something is more than the something you are getting, you should have a hint that something is not going to be as you expect before you click your mouse :glare:

No doubt - and I hope I am not coming off as saying I was ripped off. It's worth more than I paid for it. I do think I was mislead however. My biggest concern is for people who for religious reasons cannot use boar. Playing with someone's eternal soul is not a trivial matter.

anyone concerned with whether they can use a boar brush should be consulting their rabbi/imam/priest, not relying on the words of a couple of Internet posters.....

... who would say (since they probably don't have a lab or care to delve THAT deeply into shaving) that if there is a doubt they should probably avoid it. Right? I mean those are generally smart guys and that makes a lot of sense.

... As I'm sure they have. The question here is whether what is advertised as horsehair (which is kosher/halal) actually is horsehair. Kind of like making sure that veggie fried rice wasn't made with pork oil, which it sometimes is.

My Bestshave brush is a little softer then my also cheap boar Vergulde Hand brush. Hairs have split, I don't know if horsehairs split.

Actually I can not tell for sure what animals the hairs are made of. It is also possible it is a mix and that some people have more boarhairs in it and some have more horsehair in it. That is a trick that is used a lot in food too, then they put 0,03 of an expensive ingredient in it and advertise big on the packaging that the ingredient is in it.

Halal, that's the word. Thanks. I have a Muslim gentleman working for me and I have been learning a lot from him. I grew up in New York where kosher was a very familiar and pervasive thing. It seems they are very close in their roots.

You're making a lot of assumptions and confusing ingestion with contact. My statement on consulting a rabbi stands.

I'm gonna head outta this thread....

Aha, I got ya. Well yes I am making an assumption - based on the way these are marketed as "not boar, for Muslim men." That seemed to imply that the distinction was important.

We probably should not get into religious discussion, but I can tell you that boar shaving or hair brushes are almost always regarded as haram, and not halal for Muslims to use. You don't have to eat something to have it deemed not halal. But again, I only bring this up because of how the brush is advertised.

Oh, and I have an authoritative source: my Muslim wife, who is sitting next to me. :arabia:

I bought the same Turkish #6 best shave brush. When I was a kid I helped my grampa raise pigs and horses, horse don't smell like pigs. This brush smelled like pig, quite badly in fact.
As I went on the site recently I could not help but notice that there was no mention of horse anywhere on the #6 brush page (or boar for that matter) I found that interesting.
The brush is OK but it's no Omega, it's a well priced $2.45 boar brush...

It's definitely still mentioned.

Here's a screen cap: $Turkish Horse.jpg

A while back the web page read horse hair for muslim then the mention was removed. Apparently I missed the return of the horse.
It makes it even less ethical as the brush is definitely boar and not horse.

I'm glad someone finally mentioned the problem that he is misrepresenting this product. The only way to stop this type of behavior is to vote with your dollar...don't send him anymore.

I know the thread is from a long time ago but I couldn't resist. I will be inclined to believe it's horse hair till someone has had it checked professionally under a microscope to prove it's boar. I bought horse and believe it is horse it acts totally different than any boar I have. So till I have prof other than he said or she said it's horse hair. I like these brushes better than any of the boar or badger brushes I have and LOVE the fact they can be had cheap, Cheap is not always a bad thing, as SOME think.

If you're happy and satisfied, that's what counts.
