The key words are coat and jacket.
I wear mine going to work, going out to dinner, going to a party, for walking the dig or for going to the supermarket. Chances are, if the weather is dry, below 70 and above 25, and I'm not doing something where I know I will get wet or dirty I'll be wearing a sports jacket. And if it's below 25 I'll wear a coat over the jacket.
You don't need to be classy or pretending to be classy or going to somewhere formal to wear one.
