Off topic a bit, but if you feel a lather is "too slick" and causing cuts, you may want to revisit your technique. Slickness is a good thing, and a slicker lather should make your shave better, not worse. This has nothing to do with soap vs. cream, it just jumped out at be that your issues might have other causes; I suspect you may be shaving with too much pressure. Just something to consider.
Back on topic, I prefer soaps, largely due to the variety in scents and artisans. There's also something I find satisfying in lathering a soap that I don't get from a cream. I don't find any real difference in quality.
You know you are right ! When i started keeping my face moiste with water, my lather stayed slicker and the shaves were closer as i was shaving into a very wet, lathery, soapy, slicky area !
