What's new

Show us your favorite lather bowl or mug.

I have two that I tend to grab more than the others. A DB 1.5 Scuttle with Dribble port and this Christmas received a Symmetrical Sheet metal bowl. Overall I have 11 bowls/scuttles in my den.

BobbyB - did you rough the inside of the salsa bowl? I just purchase one to try. Does it work better when roughed up?

I used my Dremel tool and router bits to abrade random groves in the bowl. Be sure to wear eye protection. The roughed up bowl works very well for me.

$suribachi.jpg If you like an inexpensive, well grooved, bowl, this $10 suribachi from Amazon is fiercely grooved to be a wasabi grater. A real lather machine when I used it. But I've heard it's hard on badger. Fine with boar.

Ron:
I use a Vintage Sears, Roebuck & Co. Catalog Ceramic Shaving Mug (I'm a 90% face latherer & 10% scuttle user), which is 3¼ inch tall and 3⅜ inch across the top. Also, this mug is small enough to easily fit many soaps and at the same time being only 3¼ inchs deep, it prevents almost all shave brush 'clanking'.

I dragged out the step-stool to explore the very top shelf of my kitchen cupboard, et voila!

A child's mug that was given to us by my sister upon the birth of my first child. It's by Wedgwood, from the Beatrix Potter "Peter Rabbit" collection.

The text reads:
(on the far side) "Once upon a time there were four little Rabbits, and their names were Flopsy, Mopsy, Cotton tail, and Peter."
(under the handle) "Now run along and don't get into mischief."
The brush is a synthetic from The Body Shop, for scale.

I would have preferred something without a handle so it would nest inside my lather bowl better, but this was the kicker - a puck of Williams Mug Shaving Soap fits perfectly without any mods.

But - since it's sort of an heirloom, I'll keep looking for another mug/bowl/ramekin, preferably with a cover.

My favourite mug is my Turkish Hammered Copper Shaving Mug.
The dimples make it a breeze to whip up a good lather.
It shone like glass when I first bought it.
But now it's got a very nice patina.

My best bowl is my Mortar Bowl - It started out in life as a mortar and pestle which I picked it up at a Chinese Shop for only €2,90
The heavy ceramic retains the heat, making it great for making hot lather in winter.
The roughened texture inside makes it a breeze to whip up a nice lather.
Even when it's not in use, I use it to store my facecloth (see 1st pic)
