Shaving bowls, mugs... confused

Go to a local dollar store. They always have plenty of porcelan or ceramic bowls and mugs. I got a nice big one with a coffee cup handle for the lathering and a smaller matching one for the soap. The lathering bowl stays warm for 15 minutes, the handle makes it easy to hold with wet hands. Nice colors too...

Don't spend more than you need to...

there are lots of ways to lather with soap. some people lather directly on top of the soap (this uses the most soap), some transfer to a bowl after they get some lathered on a brush, and others lather on the face.

it'll be up to your boyfriend to use whichever one he sees is most productive and enjoyable of course.
