Ok, I admit I haven't read every response to the OP. I had some pretty nasty issues when I started running again, what helped me was to go to a running shop, or a running boutique if you will. The particular shop I went to did a 4 step fitment process: sized my feet, stand on a thermal pad (checked out my arches), filmed me running on a treadmill in a neutral shoe, then suggested 3 pairs of shoes which I got to put on and wear around the shop until I decided on one. My foot pain didn't magically go away, but within the next week or so, I was running with no pain.
