Pen Review - Senator Solaris

Senator Solaris
$wm_original_2013-04-11_15.49.02_original.jpg
Made in Germany, Discontinued (Recently checking Senator site, seems only "President" model left available as fountain pen version).

Appearance and Design

Large metal fountain pen, made from matte metal (no idea if steel or aluminium) with a plastic insert in the middle (over the metal barrel) that has some 3D ribbed texture, purple(ish) in color. Nice comfortable grip section that is nicely machined with some ribbed rings that help with the metal grip. As pictured pen has both the ends rounded the back section slightly more then the cap. Simple sleek clip form, with the senator S/E styled logo near the top. Clip has nice soft action (feels like spring loaded) and quite secure with a notch at the end, opens easily and snaps flush with the body when released. Nice sleek rounded form, only thing that is not to my liking is the nib size compared to the body.

Large size, huge (by my opinion) when posted. Quite comfortable even tho it is all metal, grip including.

Weight and Dimensions

Length: 140mm closed
126mm open with no cap
152mm capped

Width: 12mm, narrowing down to 10mm at the grip end.

Filling System and Maintenance

The pen is Cartridge/Converter type. Accepts the international standard cartridge size, body has space for any size converter. The Nib section is friction fit, quite easy to disassemble, given the section is metal there is a plastic/rubber insert inside in which the feed and nib get inserted. The insert is notched on one side, as well as the feed, so it easy to fit it back inside.

Nib Performance

Steel Nib, Marked with the Senator logo, Germany, and size (in this case M). Stiff smooth nib with a bit of a feedback, not to wet when writing, decent flow and no issues with fast writing.

Conclusion

Overall great pen, only thing I would have loved on this is a bigger Nib, feels kinda off in proportion to the quite large body. Quality machined metal, all edges are smooth and there is no sharp/rough corners etc. Even more then one would expect from its price. Would have been a great starter pen if still available for purchase :) sadly senator seems to mostly make ballpoints and roller ball pens nowadays. Comparison with (from right to left) Parker Vector, Senator Solaris, Pelikan 400 NN and Monteverde Prima.
