What's new

NEW CLUB - Vintage Gillette Razor Fan Club “VGRFC”

Had the 2nd shave with my NDC Superspeed. It's quite uncomfortable to use, it's harsh. I always use the same blade, same cream, but these 2 shaves gave me tons of irritation. The shave just felt rough. It's efficient though. I don't know, I might give it one more chance and experiment with angles a bit more. Otherwise, I'm going back to my later Superspeeds.

The end fell off of my 1965 or 1967 (can’t remember the year off hand). Do you know anyone who repairs razors? Hopefully, repair wouldn‘t cost a lot of money.

Chris Spencer at Back Roads Gold is your man!

I’m pretty sure it’s fastened with solder and can be reapplied by heating until the solder is fluid again.

If you have a small torch that’s probably the best way.

No.
It's really broken.
It's not that the end cap fell off.
The picture shows the end cap with a tab in the center.

The end caps on Super Speeds don't have tabs in the center.

What's missing in the picture of the razor, is an integral part of the center bar.
The center bar which goes through the blade,
is formed from a folded piece of sheet metal with the seam becoming the top of the bar.
The bottom part which is missing,
is formed by folding the two halves of the bottom of the center bar away from each other
so that the very tips are folded again back into the holes of the top cap pieces.

This is not repairable with glue or solder.
That kind of repair wouldn't be strong enough.

Here's my contribution to this Club. This is my collection of vintage Gillette razors. I have been collecting for almost 2 years come March. Most of my stuff I've acquired locally from antique shops, a couple of got from online
1st row Super Speeds: 49,50,52 X3,54 Z2, 56 B1,54 Z1, 68 N4,86 G3,86 G4.
2nd Row Adjustables: 58 D3,59 E1,61 G3,61 G3, 62 H3, 68 N1,69 O4, 70 P1. The LG is 1965 K1, and the ST is a 68 N1
3 row: Old Pocket Made In Canada, 20 Single Ring, Old type, Old Type Late, 21 Richwood, New Long Comb, Pre war Fat Handle Tech, Contract Fat Handle Tech, Contract Tech, 1965 K2 Travel Tech.
The last row is my hard lessons I learned and collecting there is either finish issues or mechanical issues that I didn't spot, also the blade banks are just pitted to heck. As for shaving my favorite is my executive fat boy. My first goal when I started was to find a fat boy. Second was to to find an executive fat boy, and a Aristocrat Slim like my grandfather shaved with, I accomplished this year. The main focus with my vintage Gillette collection now is to find a 1987 H2 Black Beauty, and super speed. After that I'm looking for a non-notched milord, Ranger Tech, super speed or aristocrat. My last goal for this year is to downsize some of the duplicate models.

I don't know if I'm in, that's a really long acronym lol. Maybe VGRC?
Anywho, here's the vintage collection. Two of the shelves are "not Gillette" the other 6 all Gillette.

Sorry, 10 photo limit!
I think your collection qualifies you as a "fan" such that you get to use the full acronym. Lots of beautiful examples in those cases. Stunning 🙇‍♂️

Lol, thanks. I've whittled it down quite a bit to venture into some pricey French vintage pieces. Alot of redundant Gillette pieces went, and they are missed. Still, I haven't been able to bring myself to list one of my double rings... the one on the left is "pat apl'd for" the other a 1905 serial number... that's different enough to justify keeping both, right? No way the 1903 is going anywhere!

Here's my top "not Gillette" shelf if anyone is interested. My only want is a Darwin in the coffin case. Still kicking myself for passing on one for $700 when I had the chance, the funds just weren't there at the time.

So you got those by posing as a Gillette Plant Security officer?!? Why didn't I think of that! @mr-razor better watch out.

New to me! I hope @Old School TSD is checking his definitive collection.
Never have seen that myself... @Breen , is it stamped in or embroidered? Idk if that's the correct handle for that case... Old Type's were in the newer, thicker cases with the silk lid liner and stamped logo.

The older abc sets had a solid brass, smooth ball end handle. I may be mistaken, but I think they were made in Canada.

I have been remiss in not posting my most recent Gillette wild finds to this thread:

1922 New Improved Bostonian (snaggle tooth, owner's name and hometown scratched on the bottom of the elevator case)

The Bostonian and my 1922 silver Tuckaway traveled through the Gillette plant close together. 970478A and 970510A. The Bostonian seems a bit more aggressive than the Tuckaway.

I also now have a 1921 gold NI Tuckaway, in a decent user grade. It is currently loaded and in the den medicine cabinet.

So today my French produced Tech came I don't have much info on it since it's not even on mr razor website. I saw on a certain video that it's considered to be mild and has a 0.020 gap. I shaved with it and I can't say it's very mild, it has blade feel, but it shaved smoothly and no weepers or irritation so I would put it in mid tier. If anyone has more info on this razor, I'd appreciate it.

A super shave with what I call my "shave-year" razor: a razor I could have started with but used the cartridge product Gillette sent as a promo.

NOS Personna Platinum Chrome
TGN 20mm silvertip badger in a vintage Ever-Ready handle
Stirling Unscented with Beeswax
I'm waiting for a 1968 version of that razor I ordered recently. Looks great!

Today I received a NEW Tech long comb, nickel replate by Razor Emporium, and a 1941 Ranger! The Ranger will be heading to Razor Emporium for a Rhodium replate and tune up, although the razor seems to function perfectly. I'll most likely sneak in a shave before I send it off to get plated.
