Is this ok?

I know it's your opinion, but that's pushing it for me. Any word that is used to express angst, surprise, or joy that is a euphemistic dysphemist sentiment is suspect? Oh, dear!!!

Phil, thanks for the reminder.

It's actually pretty well spelled out in the Forum Rules, for those who have read them.

2. Realize that we take great pride in B&B being a work-friendly, internet oasis for gentlemanly behavior. This means that profanity, inflammatory comments regarding politics and/or religion, personal attacks, pornographic images, discussions of illegal or illicit activity, or any other ungentlemanly behavior as deemed inappropriate by the Administrators/Moderators, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Offenders will be dealt with swiftly. More to the point, if it's likely to be offensive, or if you wouldn't say it to someone in person, it doesn't belong here.

Profanity is profanity. It doesn't matter if it is as strong as the F-word or as light as the H-word, it's still profanity. And it doesn't matter if you try to hide the fact that you used profanity by substituting in grawlixes for some of the letters, your intent was to use profanity and it is just as wrong for forum use.

I wouldn't personally feel uncomfortable saying "Well fudge" in front of my Priest or Grandson, but I probably wouldn't as it just isn't part of my vernacular style.

I think B&B is very user-friendly and free speech is encouraged. The best part of this community is that we promote gentlemanly discourse. I don't think veiled obscenity has its place in a public forum of any kind. I for one would support further censoring by the Mods if necessary. So, let's just all do our best to promote civilized, gentile discourse.

The first two seem like totally obvious exceptions, but I have honestly seen the last word used even by mod's. I only mention this because I was reprimanded for it awhile back and was kind of scratching my head for a bit. I don't mind it being off limits, but I just didn't see any clear direction that it was, especially when those in charge were throwing it around.

personally, I think that if you have to say to yourself "I hope nobody gets offended by this:" then chances are good that you shouldn't hit submit.

I guess the intent is what I'm talking about. If the intent is there the words used really don't matter.

If you see profanity being used, please report the post or feel free to PM me, with the understanding that a PM may not get immediate attention.

Correct me if I am mistaken, but isn't the point of this :cursing: guy there to censor :cursing: you would otherwise use?

:censored:

Lets not forget this one as well. So even if you really feel the need to express yourself to that degree, there are built in options to use without needing to try skirting the rules against profanity. My personal guildeline is if I'm tempted to use those smilies, I should also close the window, go do something for a bit, then come back to post and see if I still think I should use them. If so, it's time to set the scotch down and go to bed.

+1 I mean, it's never really THAT serious to NEED it.

I don't remember using off language, on this site, although, I may very well have done so. I agree with the major words that everyone knows are bad. I'm not sure I find *** as offensive as the others.

The problem is, if someone wants to say something, they'll find a way to do it. For example:

Are any of these acceptable

1. What the ****

2. What the ____

3. What the :censored:

In the above ex.'s people are free to enter any number of words. I think the intent is still there, without actually spelling it out. I'm not for cursing, but I think there are ways around it for people who want to do it.

I think if the site clearly spells out what is acceptable and what is not, it would be easier for the mods and the people helping to police it. I'm just not sure it's possible to completely eliminate it. What about these:

What the fudge
Shut the front door
bullpucky

IMO these are just candy coated cuss words. I don't think I would pm a mod over them though.

Thanks, Phil, for your continued efforts to keep us all on the straight and narrow.

It's difficult to find the balance between loose/informal and uptight/prudish.
For me, B&B is a place for a higher level of decorum that the "outside" world seriously lacks.
I think we can all find a way to get our ideas across in a family-friendly way.
