Homemade Hone

I found an unknown piece of slate, and had some time on my hands. So this is what I have turned it into so far.

I have a few questions at this point. Has anyone else tried this? and does it look viable as a finish stone? Is 400 grit wet/dry
going to leave a fine enough surface or should I lap it to 800. Have to work with what I have due to recent job loss and need a finish stone Hone size is 7.25 long and 3 inches wide. Beveled all 4 sides. Grit feels like 10,000+ so I'm very hopeful so far.
