Four Roses single barrel or Four Roses small batch both should be under $40 more like $30 - $35 range.

I 2nd the four roses. It's got a lot going on for the price. Wild turkey ain't all that bad either.

Jim Beam is a favorite of mine, usually mixed with Sprite if not straight.

+1 for woodford. The best in that pricepoint. You may also want to try basil haydens. Makers mark has a master distillers limited release. There are 2 different styles. One is done in a traditional bourbon style also one is done more like a scotch and both of those are good. Or get into the japanese whiskey scene which is really amazing with lots of good choices.
