cordovan question

what i would like to know is how do you tell if a vintage/new strop is made of cordovan horse hide.

is it just the texture on the surface how does it feel ?
plus any tips of identifing cordovan.
is it the velvety feel that you get on horse hide/ is it the greasyness some horsehide has. i cant find any where how to tell the difference between normal horsehide and cordovan.

I'm no expert but I have all types and the Cordovan feels like no other. I'ts just a luxurious, soft, pliable, and slick feeling piece. Regular horse depending on it's processing can feel like any other type of leather.

Shell cordovan leather is made from the horse's rump. It is very uniform and durable, but not easily distinguishable from other similar colored horsehide. For more info see: http://www.shellcordovan.com/what-is-shell-cordovan.html

I think shell cordovan is the inside layer of the leather between the flesh side and hair side.
