Brush Chronicles #8: H.L. Thäter 4125/1

I think this is what I've been doing wrong, hydrating from the outside in. :tongue_sm But seriously, that's lovely looking lather. I'm picturing the softy softness of that Thater. I hate this forum.

[Edit] You know what, I've also been missing umlauts. Uber lather just isn't the same without them.

Vlad- a little löve letter vöm Deütschländ..... ööööööööööö äääääääääää
üüüüüüüüüü öööööööööööööhhhh bäby!

That is ein fantastiche looking brush and one I have had mein Auge on for some time. Glad to see a "brush chronicle" being made on it by a couple of ernst brush Meisters.

On with the Pinselporn!

So I still want one of these (I just paid for my M&F Beehive, though)...how did they do face lathering?

Depending on what qualities you are looking for in a brush, this one could be quite suited as a face lathering machine. As Jeremy said earlier- the tips are almost impossibly soft, so lathering on the face for a long time is easy to do without irritation and the brush has good backbone.

What a wonderful bulb-shaped knot! A couple of photos to show the size of this brush (and please don't forget that Jeremy's brush is a size larger)

I am a soap shaver, but for the purposes of the Brush Chronicles I am going to be using soaps and creams to test the performance of this brush. As expected, it did a great job eating up a little shave cream as well..........

Proraso is a staple!

David, those photos are sheer elegance. Now I wish I had the 4125/0 instead. The size looks irresistible when compared the Eagle.

It depends what you're looking for. If you really like smaller brushes then the 22mm is very nice, but if you don't mind a bigger brush, the 24mm feels softer and more luxurious, I had both in my hands at the same time and I almost wanted the 24mm for its feel, but at the end of the day I recognized it was too big for me.

Vlad, please ignore this post, cause I seem to remember that you are the enforcer for the Sabbatical.

SBAD took over, I lost my mind, and I bought a 28mm, 4292/6 from SRD. I really wanted a 30mm, but I think this will work. :thumbup1:

I plan to put him up against my M&F and Rooney XL. I also had it in mind to pass him to my big brush enablers, Kbuzbee and Vlad if they are interested in seeing how he performs.

Way to fail the Sabbatical! Looking forward to seeing that baby in the Chronicles.

George, looking forward to hearing your report. I too have sat on the side-lines with this one, worry about the lack of backbone for the soaps I use. The perfectly shaped knots is what attracts me to these brushes...the hair characteristics is what keeps me sitting on the side-lines :tongue_sm

I would not worry about lack of backbone with these brushes. You can always talk to the place you buy it from and ask to hand select one with a shorter loft. I posted above, mine came with a 48mm loft when the spec implies 53mm and others reported 50-52mm.

The hair is very springy, push it around and it will snap back in place. After my brush dries, the knot goes back to almost its new shape.

Another thing I noticed is that the tips of the hair curl which is something I really like. It makes the brush feel a bit scratchy when dry, but get it wet and it's very very soft. The instructions the brush came with say the curling is caused by hot water, but that's not the case, I use cold water to shave (works better for me) and just lukewarm water to wash the brush. It's definitely not the water temperature but a characteristic of the hair which to me makes it special.

I'm attaching the instructions (pdf - 2 pages) the brush came with, for those interested. Some good tips and some weird ones (no face lathering? seriously?). Interesting how each manufacturer has contradicting instructions.

I was running late today, since I woke up late and had to explain (again) the finer points of straight shaving to my soon-to-be three year old daughter, so no pictures.

Today's adventure included the Thäter and Cella in the red tub. The lather was good, but not great. Again, I was in a hurry, so I'll call this one operator error. The lather wasn't as slick as I remember from the last tub of Cella. I added a fair bit of water for the second pass, but it didn't get any slicker. Also, this tub smelled way more marzipan-y than my previous tub - did something change?

A lot of mumbling in German in my place this evening....... they might be discussing the football match

How old was your last tub?
