What's new

Your take on this custom brush?

What's up with all these (vulgar? phallic?) looking brushes? There's no way I'd want that brush spreading hot, creamy lather all over my face. Shudder!!
I think I'll go with an Omega. It looks like a brush, and nothing else.

Don't think I would waste my time on this guy.

However, if you are looking for a nice custom brush, order one from Ed Schisler. He is a member of B&B and makes really really good brushes. I just bought one from him and was really pleased with the brush, handle and finish. I will get my next custom brush from Ed.

www.edscustombrushandrazor.com

He also posts on Ebay.

I want to restore my 2 VdH brushes and an old aluminum handled brush I have that looks like horsehair for the knot.
I'd like to get some sad, old brushes to restore.

I may have to buy an Omega to use while I'm working on my Van der Sheddin' brushes. They've developed brush pattern baldness.

Last two brushes look good, but $60-$75 for the handle, plus the cost of the knot is higher than established forum members with reputations for good brushes charge.

His prices seem to reflect what others are charging for custom brushes. Rudy quoted me $75 for one of his. Looking at one of Ed's, with shipping, it's minimum $65 if only 1 person bids on it. This guy's Silvertip is Buy It Now $65 shipped. Considering the TGN knot cost him $18 plus shipping, I don't see an issue with charging $45 for the time spent making a nice handle and setting the knot.

Anyway, the guy took a beating on his first brushes, he listened to the advice and criticism here in this thread, and came back with 2 very nice and worthy brushes. Just wanted to make people aware.

He's gone from this:

No offense but if the maker wants to sell brushes here, he ought to join the forum and post for himself.
Since everybody's using the same knots the only way to differentiate the different makers is by their turning skills, which can be subjective and the quality of the materials they use.

Funny thing, the more I look at that first brush, the more it looks like an RWS Superdome airgun pellet.
It looks like it would be easy to hold onto. 2 fingers on either side of the head, with the shaft extending through. Great, if you ever needed to use it as a weapon. Or if you like to lather with a clenched fist.

I do like the second one better. larger at the butt than at the muzzle (to use gun terms), is easier to hold onto. If he made a handle like the VdH or the Omega Pro 49 or 10005, but out of that wood, I'd be all over it. Assuming I had the money to buy it, of course.

Whoever said the first one looks like a makeup brush seems to be right on the money. It's even listed under blush brushes.

Welcome to the forum! I enjoy seeing vendors coming on to speak to their target demographic and ask for advice. Very cool. :thumbup1:

Have you been following the trail of responses on the handles I have turned and have for sale on eBay? I guess the first few were not very good by way of standards - so I studied up a bit and made a couple more - posted those today and still not getting reall good remarks - I thought they would have been a little better...Can you offer any advice for me?

How do you mean? Sorry if this is a question for me I did not understand...Being on forums is all brand new for me...so I will have a learning curve here trying to figure things out

I think when he said about the silver on top, he was referring to the first brush with the weird handle. It's all black on the tips and silver in the handle. At any rate, I think you've progressed nicely in a short period of time. Considering Ebay fees, PayPal fees, cost of the knot and shipping, the wood and its shipping and your time in making the brush, I think your price is fair. If the brush was 20mm, I'd buy it. I personally don't like big floppy brushes. Anything over 22mm for me is too big. But there are many gentlemen here at B&B that love the bigger brushes. Good luck, you're doing well.

I will try once more,
I am the person that made the original three brushes - I purchased the bursh heads from a turning supplier (no names) I was assured they were 100% real badger hair etc....
But after getting so much attention from this forum where I do believe there is a lot of knowledge on shaving and brushes. I decided to study up on what I was doing. I am not new to turning I have been turning for some time. However making shaving brushes is a new item for me. As I explained in my previous reply I have simply been posting items on eBay to help the house hold with sup. income. I saw that shaving brushes sold rather well along with razors - So I gave them a try. Learned a few leasons on shaving brushes for sure - I would have thought however that the two brushes that posted eBay today would have had a more favorable welcome comment. They are Top Notch brushes and Very nice wood - I would truly greatly appreciate the help of learning what needs to be improved upon...if not for selling just general knowledge - I would very much like to know how to improve.
Thank you to all
I hope to hear from many of you with some helpful words.
Best Regards
