Tips On How To Clean And Revive A Vintage Boar Brush Requested

I have a few of these small brushes from toilet sets, did my own experiences on them. Do not know what they are made of, what the industry was using down here back then, maybe horse hair.

The bristles in the one on the left just came off when I tried to pull them. The other two are holding on fine. They had a musty smell so I first soaked them in vinegar and baking soda solution. Then alternated letting them soak for a while in warm water, shampooed, did the hand lather, did that a few times during a week, let them dry in room temperature, applied beard balm to them and finally a couple of days ago I let them soak in warm water with a little Downy for a few minutes.

One of them responded very well to the treatment and feels fine for use, the other still has some smell and the center bristles are stiff and tangled up.

Hard to find a replacement at that size, but I found 16mm knots from GDMG and ordered a few to experiment with, hope I can put them to good use once again!

@Alum Ladd, my Vintage Vulfix Pure Bristle had a slot for a round portion of Alum. I finished up taking it out. My little Culmak brush with the red base probably has the same but I cannot unscrew it at the moment. It feels like the Alum is missing as it really has no weight to it. I have a few of these Culmak brushes that I have picked up to restore at some stage.

That is the first brush I have seen which has confirmation that it was by design that the handle base be removed for storage, in this case for alum. I had always assumed that it was just something that some enterprising owners had decided to do, but it was never intended by the manufacturer. Very interesting 👍
