Work boots

does anyone here own a pair of the Alden Indy boots? i'd love to buy a pair but I can't justify spending $400+ for boots that are potentially gonna get beat to hell. are they as tough as they look?

I haven't tried those but I do know those white Vibram wedge soles wear quickly you will have to have them resoled in a about 4 to 6 months but the soles comfortable, my Danners came with the same sole and when I resoled them I went with a Vibram hard rubber lug sole for longer wear.

that's a given. I was asking my brother if he had an opinion on work boots and threw out some of the names mentioned here. I told him about the Thorogood brand and how I liked that they were US made. he was at Walmart or something and the conversation steered towards US made goods vs cheap Chinese made crap that Walmart is notorious for hocking. but yes, I will support US made brands whenever possible. I was disappointed to see that even Redwing boots are made in China.

Not all Red Wings are made in China i believe, the Heritage collection is still made here ,i have been eyeballing these for awhile but there is no way i would take these to a job site,i am in a need of some work boots so i may just pull the trigger on some Thorogoods!

They are cheap.
They meet the requirement.
If you get the right ones, they hold up to the task.
When you wreck them, you won't care - you'll just get another pair.

I'm the other way around. I'd rather spend a little extra and get a higher quality boot/shoe so I won't have to replace them. buying cheap shoes and having to replace them often makes no sense to me

even cheap work boots are pretty pricey, so may as well spend a little more and really get a good pair. I got some waterproof work boots for plowing snow, and they have aggressive tread which really helps on slippery surfaces.

anyone have any experience with the Field N Forest work boots from Mills Fleet Farm? http://tiny.cc/ezp6i

they're Union made in Wisconsin, just like Thorogood Boots (which Fleet Farm also carries) and cost about $120. Are they made by the same company that makes Thorogood?

They look like they are unbranded Thorogoods. It describes them as "American Heritage Series", which are Thorogoods.

I am a big fan of Thorlo socks. They have socks for everything. With the right socks, you will not have a problem with wet feet. The high-wicking polyester socks will provide the cushion you need, and will carry away the excess moisture. It may sound crazy to spend $20 on socks, but they do work.

I am surprised at all the love for Redwings. The last pair I owned (admittedly about the time the Ark landed), had cardboard innersoles. I would suggest getting the sales person to remove and show off the innersoles for any work boots you are considering.

My current safety shoes are Hi-Tech. Love them.

My employer had a van come and fit us all for safety shoes. The brand being sold by the vendor was Thorogood. I have worn these shoes daily for three years in the rain and snow. They have never leaked and are still good. I usually wear footwear out on the outter side of the heals. The Thorogood soles and heals show even wear and there is still a lot of wear to go. You could not do much better than Thorogood, if all their work shoes are as good. I had never previously heard of Thorogood and have not yet needed another pair. I do not know what the shoes cost and I do not know whether there is a local outlet where a worker can walk in a buy them in lieu of obtaining them through an employer.

Mills Fleet Farm carries Thorogood, but they have a limited selection of styles. the pair of work boots I want cost about $135, but if the Field N Forest brand I saw are in fact made by Thorogood i'll probably buy those instead.

I need to buy a pair of work boots this year; however, I have never needed any before and don’t know much about them.I’m looking for a few recommendations, either about manufacturers or specific models that you like/dislike.

Here are my requirements: Leather (brown), safety toe, above the ankle, waterproof, and under $200.

Thanks in advance for the help.

Go to the Red Wing store. No question, they are the best.

Fit is so important when considering buying any footwear and the more you can fit, the more comfort it will bring. When you cookie cutter boots for the masses, you don;t always get the comfort.

Take a look at the White's Boots measuring process: HERE

I have been told by a very knowledgable insider that White's Boots gets thier leathers from very high grade sources including the Horween Leather company of Chicago. These are not the cheap leather hides from India and Pakistan, so not only am I talking about fit here, but quality, too.

Danners and Whites are lifetime boots. Unless they get destroyed, and with just a little proper care, like I previously mentioned, these boots are poised to go to bring you comfort whenever you step into them and go to work.

They both provide restoration, which has an indication of quality. When you can send boots back to the manufacturer, that is telling me that these are not just throwaways and the transparency of quality is present.

Danners are probably the best mass produced boot out there. I haven;t physically touched the insoles of them lately, but I would still expect quality when I look underneath the innersole. No cardboard!

You other boots, while the are good, they are just fine for people to go out and do some yard work, ride a lawn mower or occasionaly climb a ladder. They will last you for years, too, because they will sit in the closet and come out on occasion on weekends. If you work in your boots everyday and I mean work, then you should probably buy two pairs of quality boots and rotate them.

Then let the kids fights over them when you pass.
