What's new

Who can name movies or TV shows that have shaving scenes.

Platoon (1986)

I was just watching Platoon and I noticed a scene were one of the soldiers is shaving.

Not great view of it but I think it's a later Tech.. the knurling being the best clue. It looks like one of the Techs with the sort of "spiral" knurled handle and the "Gillette" name into the (zamak?) caps and I believe a lot of them had aluminium handles too..

I think they were introduced about maybe '63 and were made to at least mid-late 70s in varying forms so it would be period correct for Vietnam.

Joker: Folie a Deux (2024)

Also, just recently I was watching Joker: Folie a Deux and in one scene Joker seems to be getting shaved by a prison warden with a Gillette "Fatboy". I had posted previously about it but I'd made a thread, I didn't know about this thread until afterwards. If I'd have saw this thread first I'd have posted here instead!

The knurled handle of the razor from platoon definitely looks like one of those aluminum tech razors. Can’t tell if it’s a long or short ball end version though.

There’s a possibility that the one from the joker movie might be what’s called a “psycho” tech. Psycho techs generally have a keyed locking mechanism and were generally for prison and mental health facility use. The locking mechanism is so that prisoners weren’t able to remove the blade and hurt themselves or others. Hard to tell from the photo though

Definitely a Fatboy, you can see the black ring under the adjustment dial.

I have a new one. 😎

Final Destination (2000)

I never seen this film before. I've heard about it for literally quarter of a century, since I was a kid, but for whatever reason just never got round to watching it until now.

I put it on last night and about a half hour into the film there's a shaving scene. Well.. the kid puts a razor to his neck and nicks himself.

As for the model.. from what I can see, it looks like a regular old post war, fat handle Gillette Tech in nickel. You can see the classic Gillette diamond shape on the underside of the mount and also the "lozenge shape" drainage holes which would indicate that it's a "post war" Tech rather than a "pre war" model which had the more triangle shaped drainage holes.

It's interesting that they used a DE in this film as I'd imagine it'd have been even somewhat of an antique even in 2000. Hip college kids would all likely have been using Mach IIIs or similar cartridge razors around that time! I think the Mach III dropped in '98 or thereabouts. But then again, the DE would be perfect for filming this scene.. as it pretty much looks identical with the blade both in and out. So he could rub it against his neck and "cut himself" with the blade out, or an improvised fake blade in it, and it wouldn't really look any different.

I know I got my first razor when I was about 11 around 1999-2000 (even though I had absolutely zero need for it!) One quick run over the top lip every six months would have been more than adequate in those days! How things have changed since then! I think I got some kind of Wilkinson cartridge razor as my first razor.. must have been Wilkinson's answer to a Mach 3. Then soon after I got a Mach III and used Mach IIIs for years.

I think I've found another.

Ginger Snaps (2000)

I really like this film. Cult classic teenage werewolf movie made in Canada in the winter of 1999. Stars Emily Perkins and Katharine Isabelle.

There's a scene about half way into the film where Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) is shaving her legs in the bath as she was becoming very hairy due to being bitten by a Werewolf and in turn infected with Lycantrophy.

You don't really see much of the razor, but it definitely looks like either a Gillette Super Adjustable 109 PV (plastic bottom, vertical knurling and made 1977-1981) or Super Adjustable 109 PD (plastic bottom, diamond knurling and made 1980-1988)

I suppose the long handle makes sense, good for leg shaving! It has the classic black plastic bottom of the latter Super Adjustables as you can see in the pictures.

Difficult to say if it's the vertical knurling or the diamond knurling Super Adjustable as the picture quality isn't really good enough to show the knurling pattern, plus Ginger's hand is in the way anyways..

There's one frame, the second one I posted I think, where you can just get the smallest glimpse of the handle knurling just below her ring finger, and it looks to be the vertical knurling to my eyes, so I'm thinking Super Adjustable 109 PV.
