The Injector was preloaded with a fresh blade, so no issues trying to load one handed. Put my Timeless bowl on a face towel, loaded my brush with soap and whipped up a lather.

The Haverford scent definitely grows on you. I left the lather pretty thin and it was nice and slick.

Three-day beard growth. Used my left (not normal shave) hand. I am now17 days post surgery.

Finished up with WH I put into a small spray bottle and the Nivea - also in a pump bottle.

Three passes: WTG, XTG and ATG. The ATG pass was problematic as I was unable to stretch the neck, but I didn't push it.

Another DFS shave.

Happy Friday!

The lesson I learned from the GC2.II is that sometimes a less sharp blade can lead to a higher efficiency shave. When I tuned down the GC2.II from a Wilkinson DE to a Wizamet the shave jumped from a BBS/BBS- to a BBS+. My theory is that with high exposure razors (>0.10mm) a very sharp blade might be overkill, and that by tuning down the sharpness it allows you to buff more and be more nimble which raises the efficiency. Today I applied this to the Tatara Nodachi with an exposure of 0.13mm and it worked. Whereas the Wilkinson DE I was yielding a BBS/BBS-, today it delivered a near perfect BBS+ with less irritation. The Nodachi is a work of art, more scalpel than razor and Tax Man is a fantastic soap, with a gentle mentholated feel and beautiful scent. BBS+

Happy Friday!

Abandoned By Gypsies.
Following a 2-day recovery from an aggressive shave, today was all Mitchell’s Wool Fat: original tallow soap + hand/body lotion. MWF was once a top 5 soap until they broke my heart by reformulating without… wool fat. Really?! Case in point on why engineers or shepherds or milkmaids make better CEOs than CPAs. But I digress…

Silky smooth shave with an Astra stainless blade secured by the Rockwell 6S 4 plate. Then double balm-ed with Nivea followed by MWF hand/body. Now 10 hours later and my face still feels clean, soft and refreshed.

When this bad boy runs out, I’ll shed a tear and then move on. But until then, what luxurious shaves does real MWF yield.

Today's shave:
Razor:
Weishi 9306 Long Handle
Blade: Derby Extra (shave #3)
Brush: Razorock Blondie 26mm boar
Soap: Brand New Puck of Williams shaving soap
Result: Excellent 2+ pass 10/10 BBS shave

It's been over a year since I used Williams Shaving soap by itself instead of as part of a blend. Over that time I'd forgotten about how it can deliver great lather with the right technique. I'm glad I built up a good inventory of Williams before it was discontinued.

My shave started with my normal face wash while by Blondie boar brush soaked in warm water. My new Williams puck was nicely stuck in one of my apothecary mugs. My trick for getting Williams to stay in place is to take a quarter inch thick slice from a shaving stick, Razorock What the Puck in this case, and stick it to the divit on the bottom of the Williams puck with a few drops of water. A few more drops of water spread across the bottom of the combined puck lets it stick nicely to the bottom of my mug from the get-go. This was set up yesterday evening. A loose puck can prevent the loading of enough soap.

After washing my face I took my wet Blondie, without shaking it, and went to town on my dry Williams puck. Williams is my hardest puck with the result that it's thirsty requiring plenty of water for good lather. Within around 40-45 seconds I had plenty of soap loaded and a mug close to filled with proto-lather. This was applied to my face and further face lathered from around 30-35 seconds producing a nice creamy lather with plenty of slickness. The lather had really good body to it forming nice peaks.

I then proceeded with my normal 2+ pass shave with an excellent BBS result. When it was available locally for 99 cents per puck Williams was the best shaving soap value out there. Tomorrow I'm going to see if I can get it to work well with one of my 26mm synthetic brushes with the same technique. In the past using my softer brushes on Williams generated mixed results so we will see how this experiment works.

Wishing you an enjoyable shave today!
By Tabarko did you create a blended puck or stick or just load some of each soap prior to lathering?

Truly a blade I will never revisit, Dan.

Have a blessed Friday, my friend.
Blades are one of the most YMMV elements of wet shaving. I suspect this is in part because we have very real differences in our beard characteristics such as density and hair thickness. I'm glad that Derby Extra's work well for me. While they don't last as long as my Astra SP and Dorco blades the shaves are generally of excellent quality.

Dan, your strategy makes sense, if I had found a blade that consistently delivered superior shaves to my three current brands I would also move on.

Try some Cyril R. Salter shaving soap. Tallow based and a great alternative to tallow MWF. Shaves just as well with a pleasant scent. Post-shave feel is almost as good as MWF. Currently I enjoy both of these.

October 18th

Pre Shave: warm bath
Soap: Stirling MITA
Brush: Stirling Synthetic 2
Razor: Rockwell 6C Gunmetal (R4)
Blade: Astra SP (2)
Post Shave: Thayers WH & Aloe Cucumber, Proraso Green splash
Results: DFS 9.5

Received the gunmetal 6C in the mail today (already have the white chrome) and naturally, I had to shave with it. Usual smooth shave from the 6C. The gunmetal 6C is a looker, that’s for sure. It did come in with a very small scuff mark on the chrome finish on the top plate. Not enough to warrant sending it back, but we’ll see what happens with it.
