Shave #1
Razor: Kampfe Brothers 1880 HR-P1
Blade: Gem Personna SS Coated & 3D Printed Wedge Blade Adapter
Brush: Ever-Ready 200 Synthetic
Soap: Arko
After: Skin Bracer
Rating: 9/10
Notes: I wanted to start this month proper with a shave with the oldest and rarest safety razor I will ever be a custodian of. This is Kampfe Brothers 1880 HR-P1. It is the prototype of there 1880 (HR-1A) model. There are only 2 others that are known to still exist. Because of it rarity I only get it once or twice a year for a shave. This razor is from Gen. 1 "Safety Razor" era. This was was designed to use a wedge blade which looks similar to a section of a strait razor blade. It came with a strop tool that is for ease of sharpening and honing the blade. Also it has no blade stops as that was not invented yet, It has blade hooks that tension the blade downward to hold in place on the combs, and has a lever that comes up in the back to hold every thing in place. What I use is a 3D printed adapter that with a modern gem blade copy's the profile of the wedge blade. If I properly set it up, I would put it at a 4 out 10 in aggression. The shave was great with no cuts or irritation. I think its held up pretty good for being almost 145 years old.

A very satisfying shave today!

Enjoy your shave today!

I’ll kick off Vintage April with my FatBoy birth razor (G2). I keep it for nostalgia as shave results are average for me. Three passes (9, 5, 3) took care of three days’ growth, 2nd use Treet Platinum.

There’s nothing vintage about my favourite shave soap, Savonniere du Moulin 🫏, or the Semogue piggie 🐷

Will let the OG Seaforth! Heather take the spotlight.

Cheers!

Razor: British Gillette No.48 Aristocrat Junior (1948)

Starting proceedings off with a shave featuring the wonderfully assertive and growly Aristocrat Junior No.48, the first British solid bar TTO to bear this name. Featuring a super speed action the 48 was only in production for just over a year, until replaced by the equally gorgeous and aggressive AJ 51/53 razor (same razor, but presented in different sets)

A magnificently glacial and close shave with this baby, which I have finally got the hang of. A lovely example of Gillette's London Isleworth factory in it's golden age.

Excellent!

Tuesday morning vintage April shave #1 (rated 9.5/10) using:

  • Brush: Abe’s Brush Works Oak Slim synth (lather monster)

  • Post shave: Thayer’s Coconut Witch Hazel followed by Stirling Vanilla Sandalwood splash and Stirling Vanilla Sandalwood balm

A great shave to open vintage April with a PIF'd English Flare Tip Rocket, Parisian soap, and a beautiful brush all PIF’d by my dear friend @Guido75.

The razor is more aggressive than I like but, with care, did a wonderful job. I did nick a mole on my left cheek that sometimes happens regardless of the razor I use, and I had a somewhat persistent weeper right in the center of my chin. The blade felt a tiny bit harsh and left a tiny bit of irritation, but it delivered a close BBS finish in two passes plus minor touch ups.

The brush does a genuinely superb job loading soap and making lather on my face with a fantastic scrub feel and painting ability. What a special gift. The soap is wonderful, especially for a vegan base; it’s very slick and cushiony and leaves my face feeling fresh and clean without being dried out.

The blade came from a completely NOS, never opened, cellophane-wrapped box of 1963 Gillette Stainless blades. The original oil that would have allowed them to slide out of the dispenser had completely dried up, rendering the blades hopelessly stuck to each other. Thankfully, I know how to disassemble these metal dispensers, so I could separate the blades, oil them, return them to the dispenser, and reassemble the dispenser as if nothing happened. These were included with the Slims of that year. One of the patent numbers on the blade indicates that the blade edge is treated with PTFE. I'm surprised that Gillette didn't market them as "Super Stainless."

My shave scoring log is found HERE.

Happy shaves everyone :badger:
