Using Up Product

After a year of wetshaving I have finally finished my first product, a jar of Proraso Pre-Shave! The only reason I finished it was because I only have like 3 pre-shaves. The soaps and balms are a completely different story. I have around 30 soaps and creams and like switching it up and may never use up one. Recently I decided to only use my creams for fear of expiration after opening the top one day and seeing little white balls on the top of my Nancy Boy signature cream.

I don't have much for pre-shaves either lol.

Check your soaps, if they don't have parabens/have some way of avoiding rotting, won't they also go bad? I know Cella is a semi-soap and it goes bad, I guess some others may not, I think the triple-milled part helps.

I think the cream expiration date is something to watch out for, but I think it's more FDA-regulations, and like pills, something that can be correct, but if you store it right, I think you are probably fine...at least for it lasting a little longer than the 12-16 mos. deadline. I would think 2-3 years is more likely if it's stored in room temperature, sealed etc.

I never really know if I finish a product when it comes to soaps. You see, I take that last sliver and add it to my Frankensoap bowl, where it mingles with all of the other bits in there. Shaves with the Frankensoap can be adventurous!

I'm starting to make an effort to use my creams more, especially my oldest. I'm really starting to worry about them going bad. I have way to many...

+1 I'm not worried about the soaps going bad but I'm now trying to finish up the creams.

Lately I am of the opinion that life is too short to finish a book that I dont enjoy, I think that same logic extends to a shaving product I dont care for. It's a good thing I haven't run across one of those yet!

I've only killed off one product, my first puck of VdH deluxe soap (the first soap I bought, Williams, got used as a shower soap until I killed it). I do enjoy finishing products. I'm about out of Aqua Velva, which is an AS that will always be in my rotation. Even if I'm going to replace it with the exact same thing, I enjoy finishing it.

Specifically discussing creams, soaps, aftershaves and colognes - short of samples I think the only thing I've used up is one 125ml tube of TBS Maca Root Cream. I still have one tube that's in rotation.

Since I'm participating in the Summer of Gentlemanly Restraint it will be interesting to see if I finish another product up before September. So far my only realistic chance is that tube of TBS Maca Root Cream - I don't think I want to kill anything else off quite yet! :biggrin1:

Does anyone else really enjoy finishing a product or is it just me?[/QUOTE]

YES SIREE! Tonight I finished off a bottle of Chateau St. Michelle wine with a grilled steak:lol:

I used up a jar of Crabtree & Evelyn Nomad Shaving balm (sandalwood) today and a cheap bottle of Olay Toner last night. Feels liberating to have one less item in the collection (two if you count the toner). I "treated" myself by allowing myself to shave with a Maca Root shave cream from the Body Shop that I never got around to using.

Next up -- I'm going to try to polish off a sample of Queen Charlotte Rose Otto and a tub of ToBS Jermyn Street. I'm trying to use up creams more than soaps -- even though I'm more of a soap guy now -- because I'm worried about creams going bad. Also up, a bottle of Booster Lilac Aftershave. Comes in a pretty big bottle, but I use very liberally. I also have a good sized bottle of Sandalor Floid pre-shave that is due to be finished. Goal is to polish off both by the end of July.

Just finished a can of L'Occitane shave gel which I got only a month ago here in Peru. I shave my head and face with it every day but honestly the brush absorbs most of the product and using a brush requires you to use about 3 times the normal amount just to start it foaming. Amazing how little product is in those cans. They were all excellent irritation free shaves though.

Started this journey about 22 months ago, started with SAD and found the collection got out of hand. I had 12 different soaps\cremes in rotation and several others sitting there waiting their turn when I first came across the 3017 thread mentioned and decided to start finishing off some products. So far I have finished off two cakes of artisan soap, would not buy again as they were olive oil based and very hard to lather. Then I finished off a cake of modern Williams soap, found using more water usually resulted in very good lather but was not always the case. Currently working thru a VDH cake, found I have to use a lot less water than what I was using with Williams. Got my best lather facelathering. Going to be a while with this one but then I think I will try one of the vintage soaps that I picked up off the bay.

Does it count if I give the soap I don't use and my wife uses it up? She really doesn't care, since it's her legs and, so far, everything I've given her has been smooth.

I can't wait to finish a product. Due to storage limitations and a wife that helps me keep my spending under control I had to work out a deal when I got started. With family budget issues firmly taking hold of us, I agreed to start with 3 products, a razor, brush, blade sample, pre, and post. I ordered 4 tubes of Bigelow, during that 4/2 sale, but we agreed that counts as 1. After settling on a blade and ordering a 100 pack of that, I can buy a product as I use one up.

This may seem like I am getting walked over by SWMBO, but we have the same deal regarding scrapbooking. :001_smile

As I'm trying to use up more product, I'm finding my desire to buy new product has diminished. Funny the way that works.

For me, I have started to really learn how to use a product by sticking with it longer than 2-3 shaves. My desire to buy hasn't gone away, but my desire to research a product and use money wisely has increased.

I received a Booster aftershave (Lilac) in a lot of aftershaves I bought off of B/S/T. Was making progress in using it up, but then decided to add WH to it, making the process that much more daunting. Ugh.

I'm going to put that to the side while I try to finish up a few samples. Next up: QCS Rose Otto.

I finished off a few creams in the past month. I think the trick is to purchase smaller sizes (75 ml vs a full 150 ml tube) and to use them exclusively for a week or two at a time.

I'm not as worried about the soaps I have. I have lots of them and I'm almost certain I won't get through them for a very long time. On the plus side, there are very few products left that I really want to try. I can think of only two or three that are really calling me.
