The Scandal Sheet: Straights and other stuff

Kikuboshi 8300 was up today. Really nice edge on this one. Went with MdC Rose, did my usual preshave application after the first pass, and got a great shave out of the deal. Went back to the R41 today for the cleanup. I didn't note much more stubble last night than usual, so the Fatip definitely got the job done yesterday, but oddly I noticed a little more facial impact. Kind of crazy that a razor that is so smooth (for me) in use turns out to be a little tougher on my skin. Finished with the Veg today.

Listened to more cello suites on the way to work. I've listened to a few different cellists (Rostropovich, Starker, Harrell, and some Polish woman whose name escapes me) but currently I'm digging Yo Yo Ma's approach. They're all great, though.

Be well, everyone.

@Darth Scandalous

Congrats first on your badge.

I am curious to know what is your artificial honing stone progression, if you use or used one?

Thank you
Thank you sir.

My current progression, for synthetics, is the Shapton Pro 1.5k, Shapton Pro 5k, Naniwa Fuji 8k, and Naniwa 12k. I don't always use the 12k depending on what natural stone I am following it with, and I only recently bought it, a few months ago, a gentleman was selling it on the BST for a very low price. I also have a Shapton Glass 500 which I mostly use for knives and tools but I have used it to hone a chip out of a razor. I've also honed chips out with the 1.5k, it just takes a while.

I used to use a Naniwa Hayabusa 4k instead of the Shapton 5k but I didn't like the stone, it loaded quickly and eventually warped.

Before all that I used lapping films, usually started on 12 micron and ended on 0.3 micron over a sheet of wet copy paper.

Nice shave today, though this razor defies photography as the scales are both translucent AND highly reflective. I decided to use PdP again after some discussion elsewhere suggesting that some folks have trouble loading it and/or with the resultant lather quality. I used my floppiest silvertip which ought to be just about the worst choice for this hard soap and, well...it loaded and lathered just fine. Maybe an extra 10 seconds of loading, maybe not even that. I ended up mostly face-lathering as this brush is pretty good for that, on my skin.

Cleanup was a new 7 Day in the R41, which was uneventful. Finished with Bog Water.

After my sideman work on a de facto organ recital the other day I decided to listen to some organ music. Working my way through a rather long album of Bach works by Karl Richter. I have to be careful not to get too into the music while I'm driving, so far, so good.

Be well, everyone.

Straight today was my Sistrum. It was perfectly adequate. I think I'm just gravitating less toward the super-thinly ground blades these days. Still, an excellent shaver. Dug out my Muhle STF and was surprised that it didn't feel as pokey as it sometimes does. Maybe my skin is just toughening up. Whipped up an excellent batch of lather with Proraso Red. For the cleanup pass, I was digging around for the tuck of 7 O'clock Permasharps that I thought I had; if I do, they don't live in my top drawer. At any rate, I found a lonely Astra SP so I loaded that in the R41. Kind of an odd blade, feels a little resistant, but not what I would call tuggy, and the feedback seemed quite muted. Still, got a very close and very smooth shave out of it. Finished off with Proraso Red splash. It's under 40 (F) and raining fit to choke a frog today, so it's Proraso season for sure. Will have to move the Clubman Special Reserve back to the front too, if this keeps up. I hope the rain slacks off enough tonight for the trick or treaters. I do love handing out candy. I just pop the screen out of the stormdoor and hand it through. The dog is always fascinated by the whole affair.

Be well, everyone.
