The Scandal Sheet: Straights and other stuff

Did some more edge comparisons today. Spent some more time last night on the W&B, mostly getting the feel for a couple of mid-range naguras although the ultimate goal was to dial the edge back a notch. Also tested my Soderen which I had honed Sunday night. Both were still quite keen, reasonably smooth too. I think two things were working against me. One, my neck is a little tender still, two my soap today was a little less forgiving. I used PdP, it lathered fine, I had to do a fair amount of hydrating to keep it as wet as I wanted, and I think the slickness suffered a tad. But, no real complaints, some splotchiness on the neck that's a cumulative effect from the FOCS and a couple days of extra-keen straights, but no weepers or anything like that. Cleanup was the R41 and the Durasharp that felt dull when it was new, and it was still smooth but could have been sharper. I think I'm going to dig out another tuck of Nacets, I've been missing them. I finished with Bog Water today and got a decent stingle but it calmed everything down right away. EDT was Stirling Varen. I can't do oak moss every day or I get sick of it, but it's such a great scent that I do like to wear it now and then.

No time for a photo, I was rinsing my face and glanced down and one of my earrings was lying on the countertop. No idea where the stud went, probably down the drain. It was cheap so not worth looking for. But, had to take the time to find another set and try to install them with slippery hands...so...no pics.

Be well.

Had a bit of a redemptive shave today. I was to worn out last night to focus any attention on honing. So this morning I decided to do a head-to-head with my Feon, which has a very nice Ark edge, and the Eiko that I honed the other day on the loaner Jnat. I decided to go with an old reliable soap and brush combo: MdC Rose and the Vielong synthetic. Did my usual Proraso preshave after the first pass. The results were great. Soap performed exactly like I thought it should. Both razors were a joy; frankly it was hard to put one down to use the other. So that was very nice.

Cleanup, I dug out a tuck of Nacets from the back of the cabinet and loaded one up in the R41. Almost grabbed one of the News but I wanted to limit variables. Well, I knew the last Durasharp I used wasn't that sharp, but I was kind of shocked at how easily the Nacet did its work. No drama, very quick, and a comfortable tingle from the Veg. Yay.

Talked to the boy yesterday, he is no longer febrile but coughing "like a coal miner" and a flight of stairs wears him out. He's already engaged his academic advisor and all his professors so he should be good as far as missed classes and coursework.

Listened to Tony Rice's Guitar again today. I really like "Salt Creek" and "Lonesome Reuben." The latter has some really brillliant musical moments within the solos, the kind that make you go, "wait, what did he just do?" Back in the day we used to transcribe solos off the record, both to try to play them but sometimes just to make it easier to analyze. I've done J.J. Johnson, Coltrane, Bird, of course... never thought I'd be transcribing a bluegrass guitar solo but I think I may give it a shot.

Be well.
