What's new

The Edwin Jagger DE89 is a great razor.

I would love to see one in stainless steel.

I have no problem with the current head and the chrome finish is the best in the industry, but a stainless version for the collection sure would be great.

Yes they have the 316, but it is not the same head specs as the DE89

The DE89 was my first razor when I switched to DE over 8 years ago. Still have it and use it once in a while; I got a great shave with it about a month ago. I probably have to buy a SS version if they made one.

I always thought it was the same, what's the difference between 316 and de89?

Apart from being stainless steel?

Haha. Looks like I have something in common with as well as @spookmeister as the EJ DE89 being my main weapon of choice when I joined the battle 8 or so years ago.

I concur wholeheartedly vigilante. The 3ONE6 is more aggressive, but when I traded in my EJ and Muhle89, (which are both beautiful pieces of equipment), for a 3ONE6, I quickly moved into a Muhle ROCCA for a bit more bang! It is a perfect 1 day/2day compliment to my Muhle R41…..At least for my mug👍😊💈

My go to is made in England Edwin Jagger DE 89 ( good, honest and reliable shaving tool), giving me consistent performance. My best friend perhaps.
I also have Made in Germany Merkur 34 C (bad, dishonest and unreliable shaving tool). For some reason anytime I want to give it another chance, it keeps disappointing me. So many promises on forums and as such great expectations for this German product I had, that never materialized.
I keep it as the spare razor for now.

When I started this obsession, uh, hobby, in 2006 or so the most recommended starter razor seemed to be the Merkur 34HD. I started with a Progress, then added a 34.

At some point a few years later the most recommended seemed to be the EJ DE89. I'm not sure what changed. Of course, I had to try the DE89 and yes indeed it is a very fine razor, but in my hands the 34 is better (although to me they are very similar).

I'd love a SS 34 but the DE89 in SS would be a great substitute!

What are your complaints on the Merkur?

Like many others I started wet shaving with the DE89. It was a love hate relationship to say the least. Once I moved on to other razors my shaves started becoming consistently better. Not really sure why the DE89 never really worked but I haven’t looked back. I did try it again a few years go just to see if it was just a learning issue, but the shave was still subpar.

The 3one6 for me is better in every way….more efficient, more comfortable, with better feel and balance. I like that it’s all stainless as well. It’s one of my top performing razors.

I agree. Since starting wet shaving many years ago I have, like many of others here, acquired many other razors. I also enjoy many other much more aggressive razors but the DE89 with a very sharp blade continues to impress me. They really hit the goldilocks zone with an amazing comfort and enough efficiency to get close to BBS in 3 passes.

Of course for those who only do 1 or 2 passes, it might not be the closest shave but it will still be DFS and very comfortable.

I am definitely one of those that keeps wondering why neither Edwin Jagger nor Muhle will release a stainless steel version of it. Particularly Muhle, they released a stainless steel version of the R41 so why not the R89 (close to the DE89).

DE89 was the first razor I bought too. I kindof which I’d kept it, it definitely wasn’t very efficient but adding a shim helped and it was always a very carefree and comfortable shave.
3one6 is one I’ve always had on my list to try, that and the Rocca. Someday…

The Rocca and 3one6 shave similarly but I find the 3one6 easier to shave with. The Rocca is a large razor while the 3one6 is smaller and more nimble.
