tallow shave soaps

I received my first puck of D.R. Harris and have used it for three shaves thus far. It is a hard, dense soap. My guess is it will last a long while. As for the performance, so far it is very good. Lathers well and provides a slick cushion. I am going to have to rotate Williams, Mitchells and D.R. Harris to see how they compare. I use Williams on a regular basis and have done for years but since it is not being made anymore and Mitchells has gone tallow free, D.R. Harris may well be my best replacement choice.
Nice choice of soaps to rotate between. I use all three (Windsor version of D.R. Harris). Note that D.R. Harris has two base formulas, one with tallow first and another (used for Windsor) with tallow second. I also use Cyril R. Salter's shaving soap that uses the D.R. Harris tallow first base and find it lathers a bit easier though both are good.

I've also stocked up on my favorite tallow soaps with plenty of back ups for Williams, MWF, Arko and Cyril R. Salter. Also have a few non-tallow Razorock What-the-Puck soaps as they work well and will have a long shelf live since they are triple milled. Currently rotate between all of these and a few others including some custom blends.

I agree. It’s a same not to utilize all the animal after killing it. Can’t understand justifying throwing tallow away and come up with a whole different process on purpose to substitute it.

Tallow is used extensively in food products, animal feed, and soaps besides shaving soaps. The fact that some brand decides not to use it in their shaving soap does not mean it is getting "thrown away".

Vegetable based soaps, e.g. those containing olive oil as a primary ingredient, date back to ancient times.

Coconut oil based shaving creams have also existed longer than probably anyone on this forum has been alive.

Whatever base they were using 10+ years ago with both tallow and palm oil worked just fine. No experience with the current stuff as I have enough to last awhile along with newer jars of DRH creams.

Here are photos of the ingredients lists for the current formulas (D.R. Harris Windsor tallow second and Cyril R. Salter that uses the D.R. Harris tallow first base) that I purchased about a year ago. Not sure how the product you have from 10 years ago differs.

These will last me a while too based on current usage.

I don't think I have the boxes for my old pucks anymore. That said I do have an old Almond shave stick and it has the ingredients on the back. Tallowate looks to be the second ingredient. BTW the Almond soap and stick don't smell like almonds at all. More like an old fashioned cologne. Supposedly it is Eau de Quinine or something. Not sure about DRH almond cream.

That’s why I make my own. This is 4.5 lbs of deer tallow from this season. I use ld brisket trimmings for my beef tallow soap last year. It came out lovely.
