Synthetic Brushes - A Quick Synopsis

I am traveling this weekend and have used my Muhle synthetic twice so far. Used a Valobra shave stick and this brush did a great job. And to top it off it dries so fast.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words.

I hope this can provide a common framework to make it easier to discuss synthetics given the number of different fibers (generations) and approached to developing the brushes themselves.

Very informative as always. Thank you for the time you took to do this Gary! I'm very much looking forward to your impressions of the Kent and how it compares to the Muhle V2 fibres.

i just pulledthe trigger on one of the kent infinitys today, i see a few guys on here are waiting on one, it looks a nice little brush, the only other synthetic brush i have is the wilkinson sword brush, its not much cop, i hope this one performs a bit better, the other synthetic brush i was looking at was the muhle in black with chrome bottom, at £10 cheaper i went for the kent, if i like the synthetic i may go for the muhle as well.

Fantastic. I expect mine to ship tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to your initial thoughts.

Kent Infinity Silvertex - Thoughts

The quality of the brush is very good. The resin handle has clean lines and is well made. The stickers on this particular brush are very clear and legible. Now to the knot. The knot uses Generation 3.5 fibers which are similar, if not the same as, the ones used in the original Muhle STF Synthetic Silvertip brush. This today is referenced by the user community as the version 1 STF. Although not quite as good as the fibers used in Muhle STF (Version 2) or the original H.I.S. 28 mm synthetic brush, it is a very good fiber.

The Kent knot is made far denser than the original Muhle knots. This has the effect of concentrating the tips into a smaller area for greater backbone, but the tips are soft like the original Muhle Version 1 knot. Using a bowl and some current Williams soap, I was able to easily generate a test lather that was thick and could provide 3 face passes and a head pass with one soap application that covered the tip surface area of the knot. A better soap or cream would have done a far better job of creating lather but if it does well with current Williams then it is a good brush by any standards.

I hope this provides a little context on the new Kent.

Wow. that's great to know. Thanks so much. Now I really can't wait for this thing to get here. I'm really hoping to use this as my travel brush (at least).

I'm thinking for about $17 including delivery I got a steal.

Thank you for that post.
I hope that it helps to boost the knowledge and general
acceptance of synthetics.
They are definitely worth checking out.

Added thoughts:

I used this again today. I chose to face lather again with the Wilkinson Stick. I have been pushing down hard when I do my initial lather and it pays off. My brush has expanded just slightly with the downward pressure and circular motions. I was able to get the brush to splay a bit and the lather went on excellently. Good backbone due to the density. I was able to get 2 face passes and 2 head passes. I am well pleased with this brush for $30. One of the very best values on the market in terms of quality versus cost.

Great post. Pretty good summation of the synthetic scene as it now stands.

I've got a Muhle silvertip synthetic (same one as Turtle's) and a Muhle H.I.S. black fibre synthetic. The black fibre will "doughnut hole", but I still like it. It was my first synthetic and a nice soft brush. The silvertip is awesome. No doughnut holes with that one. A little more backbone than the black fibre. Because of the backbone, I use my synths with creams mostly or for face lathering with shave sticks. They work fine with soaps, but I have badgers that work better. From a softness standpoint my synths are as soft or softer than any of the super-silvertips I have. This includes a couple of Rooneys. My synths have virtually no "scritch" and feel very luxurious. All in all, the synths are a nice addition to my brush rotation.
