Shaving and mental health

Well... After a year of ups and downs I'm back on the forum and starting to get back into shaving.

I had noticed that with the shaving ritual I had 3 times a week, since I could maintain a socially acceptable appearance on that schedule worked, had dropped off to basic touch ups with the electric trimmer to keep it sort of in check.
Going from 2 jobs to one due to one company shutting their doors after 60 years, going full time at my other job and working extra hours to try to make up for the pay change. Issues with my spouse's health, my parents health, and her parents health all took a bit of a toll. It also led me to cut out the hour of self care I allowed myself 3 times a week.
I recently found myself starting at the Double edge razors, shave soaps, balms, brushes, and my shaving bowls all sitting on the shelf in the bathroom and found myself thinking...what happened.....
I realized that part of what I gave up and missed was the discussion on here with people who found joy in the time we allow ourselves to indulge in a few moments of self care on whatever schedules we keep.
So today I renewed my subscription to help keep this fine institution running and I plan to be back on regularly. I am starting back twice a week taking me time and shaving.

I apologize for being long winded but, I encourage everyone to keep track of your shaving routine and if it starts not being a joyful bit of self care and indulgence to as yourself what changed and try to find a way to get back to it as it may be a sign of other stuff being a bit off....

So now back to shaving and catching up on what I've missed.

Welcome back, and thank you for your honesty and willingness to share, it’s important. I have experienced similar myself. Finding that vitally absorbing interest has been important for me. Many things shaving related came at the right time for me, beyond mere stubble removal, without being overly dramatic, has enriched my life in some way.

This. Going through a bit of a rough patch myself. Taking up wet shaving has unexpectedly turned what used to be an unpleasant chore into an enjoyable source of self care. I don't understand it, can't explain it, but yeah there's something about it that just helps me feel better.

I definitely experienced this during Covid/quarantine times. I’d wetshaved for plenty of time before that, but the daily routine became more personally relevant (beneficial?) during that time.

Welcome back and glad to have you! Your post is not not long-winded and is well articulated.

I like your "self-care" characterization of this great hobby. I recently retired and I've stated before that I see men who retired and left let their grooming go - so to speak. I vowed not to do like wise. While I no longer need to shave daily, I don't normally go more than a couple days.

In addition to the "me" time, shaving is an integral part of my grooming routine.
