What's new

Rocnel Elite

2 shaves in with the 2023 Elite. This is a very high quality smooth shaver. It reminds me of a Timeless in the smoothness category but with better efficiency. There is just a hint of blade feel…barely. It glides effortlessly over the skin. Balance is good…ever so slightly head heavy.

I am going to put this razor in the Blutt category. Shaves super smooth but leaves my skin irritated. I’m batting 1000 lately on new razors. Not sure what’s going on with these expensive mild/mid aggressive razors but they don’t like me for some reason. I’m getting better shaves with my $80 3one6. Maybe it’s a sign to stop buying razors….🤔

It is definitely a top quality razor but I doubt it will get much use and most likely will team up with the Blutt on the BST in the near future.

I was concerned about that for you, as from reading your posts for a while, you seem to get along with the more efficient razors. Since both the Blutt BR-1 1.20 and Rocnel Elite 2023 are perfect matches for me, I wasn't sure they would work well for you.

The Elite for me is super efficient even though I don't do ATG, and the Blutt isn't. And I know you don't like super efficient. So it's all weird!
I guess these are "per user" mystery razors!

Yes, I’m going to categorize them in the mystery column for sure. The Elite is definitely more efficient than the Blutt while being equally as smooth.

I guess you never know until you try. I like experimenting with new razors but I may be at the point now that I have all I need and nothing is going to top what I currently use. It’s tough passing up on these razors that get such great reviews.

You know the Blutt also got me thinking about this. I've had a few hobbies in the past where buying new equipment just dies down and I just start to enjoy what I already have and its still great, just less fun. The dopamine hit from purchase the next shiny thing is just that, a dopamine hit. People don't want to face it but the best razor you'll ever use might already be in your den. I think it's high time I (we) move into the next phase of this hobby and be more critical in our next purchase.

I've been fortunate. I met Richard / @Mr. Shavington . He has a lot of experience and we happen to share the same needs and even wants, in most cases. As a result, I have quite a few excellent razors and haven't bought "too" many duds.. Duds for me, that is... But there are always a few when I venture out on my own... .Like the Timeless Ti hybrid 0.95 I just have to let go.... It was too efficient for me. I knew better... but couldn't seem to help myself. <eg>

At the moment, there isn't much on my must buy and try list. I avoided the OliWorks products, even though Richard enjoys them. I don't care for the weight of entirely titanium razors... so I managed to keep from buying the Paradigm Diamondback.... New razors hit the pages of B&B every week, it seems.... I'm certainly not immune, but I seem to have enough razors to keep my shaves interesting and more importantly: stellar.

I couldn't agree more.... and I know I have that malady... I am attracted to bright and shiny objects... and the rush when one arrives.... Yet, I look at the razors I have out on display..... I have enough for variety and they are all excellent. I might be able to find their equals, but at this point, I'm not sure I could find something better.

I've had 2 shaves with the Rocnel which so far haven't been very successful. But I don't want to give up on it because it's truly such a beautiful razor. I also love the weight of it, particularly the differential between the titanium handle and steel head. I'm wondering if it might improve for me with a different blade pairing. So far I've only used a Wilkinson Germany. I want to try tuning it down with a slightly less sharp blade like a Wizamet, and if that doesn't work tune it up with sharper blade like a Dorco Prime or maybe even a Feather.

It seems like the Elite and Blutt gives similar experiences where it was not a 'love at first shave' kinda thing. I'm curious, what were your last 2-3 razors that you fell in love with from the get-go? Mine was the TiBird SB and the brass Yates H plate.

Blackbird (though it did take some getting used to in the beginning), Yates H, EJ 3one6, Athena, and La Faulx. I knew as soon as I used these razors that they would be keepers. I typically can tell if I’m going to like a razor within 2-3 shaves.

Actually, I loved the Blutt from the first shave. I think they are very different razors.

I "knowingly" reached that point a while back and haven't stopped either! 😣
At this stage, I know it ain't about finding something better. It's about simply trying them out and hoping that it's good enough (like my best ones) to keep.
I don't write anymore about my plans to stop, to downsize, to not be a collector, bla, bla, bla..
I've faltered every time so I'd just look stupid at this point if I would once again mention any of that! 🤣
It is what it is!!

That's 2 so far (you & Greg) that are having issues with the Rocnel.
Reminds me of when I got the '22 stainless where I couldn't get it to work for me no matter what!
And now I get this one and it's perfect!
So strange how this all works. I'm never going to fully understand the mechanics (of shaving), how something works for some and doesn't for others. But I guess that's why we try them and hope for the best outcome. I've had plenty of razors that I've tried based on wonderful results (for others) and I've had to sell them.
It stinks but I guess it's part of the hobby for those that like to experiment. Sorry it hasn't worked out for both of you and I hope that it eventually does.
Note: I'm still on the same boat with the Blutt! 😒
