Proraso discontinuations question, what and why

Whitmore, your comprehensive list is exactly what I was hoping for. Your effort is very much appreciated, thank you. Thanks also for giving me closure on the balm. I'm not a stockpiler; rather, I will have to find another A/S product to use (when I'm not using Castle Forbes Cedar). Something handsome, not too perfumey, preferably reminiscent of barbershop. Hmmm.

This should cover all new products apart from the canned foams:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1.) The GREEN SHAVING CREAM

• has indeed been reformulated. They got rid of SLS and parabens.
• comes with a slightly modified scent. It's a bit more subdued and less medicinal, but all in all it's still the well known Proraso fragrance.
• still provides a menthol blast, it's just not as in-your-face as it was before.
• creates even better lather and provides an even better shave.

2.) The GREEN SHAVING SOAP

• has also been reformulated. They got rid of SLS and parabens.
• also comes with a slightly modified scent. It's a bit more subdued and less medicinal, but all in all it's still the well known Proraso fragrance.
• still provides a menthol blast, it's just not as in-your-face as it was before.
• creates even better lather and provides an even better shave.

3.) The GREEN PRE-SHAVE

• has been reformulated.
• comes with a slightly modified scent. It's a bit more floral than before, but all in all it's still the well known Proraso fragrance and turns out to be a perfect match for the soap / cream.
• still provides a respectable menthol blast, although it's a bit less harsh.
• is still a great performer.

4.) The GREEN AFTERSHAVE (SPLASH)

• has been reformulated.
• comes with a slightly modified scent. It's a bit less medicinal, but all in all it's still the well known Proraso fragrance.
• still provides a very nice menthol blast, although it's a bit less harsh.
• is still a great performer.

5.) The LIQUID CREAM AFTERSHAVE (BALM) (DISCONTINUED!)

• has been discontinued. One might consider the new blue balm its reformulated replacement, but they feel vastly different.

6.) The WHITE SHAVING SOAP

• has been reformulated. They got rid of SLS, parabens and Triclosan.
• features the same scent as before: lemony, fresh and lively.
• still provides a very moderate whiff of menthol.
• creates even better lather and provides an even better shave.

7.) The WHITE PRE-SHAVE

• has been reformulated.
• features pretty much the same scent as before: lemony, fresh and lively.
• still comes with a moderate amount of menthol
• is still a great performer

8.) The WHITE AFTERSHAVE BALM (NEW!)

• is new.
• features the same scent as the white soap and pre-shave: lemony, fresh and lively - although it comes with a subtle, but notable metallic aftertaste - is it the Aluminum starch?
• feels fresh, but doesn't provide a cool kick.

9.) The BLUE AFTERSHAVE BALM (NEW!)

• is new.
• is most likely supposed to replace the liquid cream aftershave balm.
• comes with a fragrance that somewhat resembles the old liquid cream aftershave, but it's still very different: it's a rather fruity, warm scent.
• doesn't give any kind of cooling sensation.
• is a good performer, although next to the extra-fresh soaps, creams and pre-shaves it feels somewhat out of place.

10.) The RED SHAVING CREAM (NEW!)

• is new.
• features a great, rather unusual Sandalwood fragrance.
• doesn't give any kind of cooling sensation.
• is a great performer, and could be considered a winter cream for those who love their Proraso.

Conclusion:

• In my opinion the reformulated products are fantastic - although they come with slightly less menthol and a slightly different fragrance, they continue to be first class shaving goods.
• To me it looks like Proraso wanted to turn their somewhat harsh, medicinal 50s menthol bombs into slightly more sophisticated, extra fresh shaving essentials for both older and younger generations.
• The discontinuation of the liquid cream aftershave pains me; it's that simple. They introduced the blue balm - which is nice enough - but it's definitely no replacement. They should rethink this decision.
• The new white balm is great.
• So is the new red shaving cream.

I could be wrong, but I think that the Pre-Post has only been repackaged. I don't use the balm, so I don't know about that.

Sir, I hope you're correct! I've read somewhere that the Pre/Post is being repackaged into a 300 mL only (as opposed to the 100 mL and the 500 mL packages previously available). So we'll see!

Why do these companies reformulate?

I use the pre/post and liquid cream aftershave products every shave. I use them because they are classics and work well. I guess I'll have to find a new balm to use, but it's gonna be hard to replace. I don't know if I'll try the new blue balm.

I just finished off a 500 ml barbershop pot of pre/post. It took me around a year. I use it before every shave and I slather on a lot. I might try another pre-shave now, possible 3P. I'll always wanted to try that one, now here is a good excuse.

If you like the old stuff, you can still find enough of it available to last you a very, very long time.

I, too, use the pre-shave before every shave, and I use a fair amount. The new stuff works well enough, although I like the prior version better - don't be afraid to try it.

By all means, though, let us (re: me) know how the 3P works if you try it - I've been thinking about buying it as well.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy a pot so I will definitely post results after I use it. I have been intrigued by it because it has a different ingredient list then Proraso.

3P: Aqua, Stearic Acid, Paraffinum Liquidum, Camphor, Glycerin, Cetearyl Alcohol, Ammonium Hydroxide, Phenol, Sodium Borate, Menthol, Benzyl Alcohol, Methyl Salicylate, Parfum

It's supposed to be very creamy and do a fantastic job at softening the whisker and I can see why by looking at the ingredient list. I like the fact that it contains mineral oil (paraffinum liquidum) because I have a very thick and stiff beard and I have found that products with more "rich" ingredients (oilier/fattier?) such as mineral oil, lanolin, tallow etc. do a better job at dominating my whiskers and giving me a smoother, nick free daily shave. This product looks like a richer version of Proraso pre/post.

Please include me too!

I was hopefult that the Red would be the original wheat germ product with similar paraben & sls removal. Guess that's not the case.

I am a bit bummed that they are toning down the scents and the menthol kick. I liked having the original reformulation when I felt like getting a retro shave, and a menthol blast. I'm sure they will be first class performers and I'm sure I'll continue to purchase but I'm one of those crusty folks that hates the reformulation projects that various vendors execute.

Thank you for that summary - it is helpful. I've been looking for the replacement to the aftershave lotion and now understand why I can't find it. Looks like I'll be switching to mixing 444 with other things for that cool menthol kick.

I started using the new formulation pre/post cream and it's great! I feel like this new formulation works very well with whatever lather I mix up. It's much creamier and I feel like the menthol sticks around a little while longer than the previous version. Of course I've been curious about 3P for a long time, too. Might have to try it.

The scent of the original splash brings me back to a specific time and place that the new formula just doesn’t do justice. Good information here, but personally I liked the menthol in your face medicial characteristics of the original formula.
