Name your brush with greatness

Met Richard Starkey aka Ringo Starr when I worked as a bartender in a hotel. Also met Suzanne Somers in the 90's and she looked better than ever.

Recently, I met Chris Hadfield. On earth, not in space.

Well I cannot equate "greatness" with "famous", but I've met numerous dignitaries......
(All for work reasons mind you)

But perhaps the one that sticks out is meeting Tom Selleck as he opened a door for me to a Sushi place in Sierra Vista AZ.

Am I the only one who read the title and thought this thread was about naming your shaving brush with an appropriately "great" name?

Ben

Me too, but I was stumped, because all of my brushes are low-end. Giving them "great" names would be like naming a mobile home "Chateau le-" whatever.

Mr. Selleck is and has always been a class act and a true gentleman in every sense of the word, and he brings it to his acting.

It would not surprise me to find that he is a member here.

I forgot one that everybody should know. I was going through some of my old pictures tonight and found one where I met George Strait on May 9, 2003. He was roping calves with his son at a rodeo in our small East Texas town. It wasn't a publicized event, but there was a rumor that he would be there. I met up with him later in the parking lot and got a photo of him with my step-father, who was providing security.

my favorite singer. retiring he says. humph

Richie Havens hit me on the head with his guitar. I was at a concert and he was leaving the stage and swung his guitar over his shoulder just as I was coming up behind him and he cracked me a good one on the noggin.

I also got to hang out in Don McLean's dressing room. I was the photographer for a small college and the concert promoter wanted some pictures of him and Don hanging out, so I was invited back. I got to meet many famous people in that job. I once drove Jose Greco to the liquor store and went to supper with Geoffrey Holder (just my wife, me and Geoffrey).

How was Don's attitude? When I met him after his show he wasn't very friendly; then again, maybe he was just tired.

Don was very nice. It was a very small school and American Pie was just becoming big, so he had not really hit the big time yet. He hung out after the show and signed autographs for anyone who wanted them. He was just standing by the door after the show smoking a cigarette and folks just lined up and he signed as long as people were waiting. I got to see him a couple years before when he was still a warm up act and then just as he was hitting it big. Great shows both times.

When I was based at Camp Pendleton, word came down that Lee Marvin was on base doing some filming and visiting the enlisted clubs. My Gunny found out when he would be at the San Onofre club, so I called my wife and asked if she wanted to go. Gunny closed the whole shop. I picked her up, along with our newborn twins and went to the club. In walks Marvin with this huge entourage. The wife and I are sitting at a table with the kids and a MSgt. comes up and asks us if we would like to meet him and have a couple pictures with the kids. Sure!! He was very gracious. WWII Pacific theatre Marine. Somewhere in my ex-wifes house is a pic of Lee Marvin holding one of the kids and her with the other.

A few weeks ago, a guy called the barber shop and asked if he could get a haircut and shave. The owner said sure, come on down. She informed me since I'm the only one that does shaves. As I'm getting my stuff ready I hear the door open so I turned around. I thought "Holy sh*t, that guys big". The name Mike over the phone turned out to be Mike Golic from Notre Dame, the NFL,ESPN and the Mike and Mike show. He was very gracious and personable.

I've had a few....

Walter Payton would come into the record store in Woodfield mall where I worked. A friendly and gracious guy.

I was able to meet & greet R.E.M. (my favorite band at the time) after a concert in Chicago in 1987. The next night the db's (R.E.M.'s opening act) were playing a north side club. While getting a drink at the bar I bumped into R.E.M. bassist Mike Mills. He recognized me from the previous night, and I got to hang out with him and Michael Stipe for a while.

My girlfriend/wife-to-be and I, along with a gaggle of her friends, went to see Bob Saget at a Chicago comedy club in the late '80's. We were all seated way in the back tables. We're sitting there between acts when some guy standing behind my girlfriend starts to give her a shoulder massage. I look up--it was Tom Dreesen, who was about to do an impromptu set. The best part was my wife's friends--very conservative and morally uptight--had no idea that Saget worked "blue". Now THAT was funny.

Well, he wrote the most *** beating song ever. I LOATHE American Pie.

On edit- not only is it bad, but it is bad for seven agonizing minutes.

Where do I start? Danced at the first communion dance with Steve McQueen's daughter when he was in Taipei filming "The Sand Pebbles"; Shook hands with LBJ when he came home and landed at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Sheryl Crow and Elizabeth Vargas was in my class at University of Missouri (Brad Pitt was a Sigma Chi member while there). Got to meet Janet Guthrie at the Indianapolis 500 when she was first woman trying to race there(I was a photographer with AP during practices and the race). Went to Cape Kennedy to see the Apollo 13 launch. Got to meet and speak with Gene Roddenberry when he spoke to a small group at Mizzou. Worked as an intern for then Congresswoman, now Senator Barbara Boxer. Worked for John Naisbitt (Megatrends). Better quit now, it is sounding kind of Forrest Gumpish...

Oh yeah, I apparently ran into 3 Doors Down once. I work at a shopping mall. They were in town to play a concert, and while I was making my rounds at work, I hear security call over the radio that there was a professional rock band in the mall (I think the call was just to make security aware, in case we started getting crowds). The word went out who it was, and that they were in the coffee shop. That was right near I was, so I hurried over and saw... some guys in the coffee shop. I was never a huge 3 Doors Down fan, so I had (and have) no idea what they look like. And this was about 12 years ago, so I can't even look them up now, because I don't remember what the guys I saw looked like. Maybe it was them, maybe not.

But that brings to mind another guy I met: Scott Asheton, drummer for The Stooges. He's friends with my sister's ex-boyfriend.
