March 2025 Gentlemanly Restraint Until Month End (GRUME)

Delete the carts as a sign to yourself of your intention. What are they gaining you sitting there?

If you want to track the items you are considering to buy someday, why not start a list, on paper or on your phone?

I did fail out of the Feb GRUME, so take my words with a grain of salt. But I didn’t buy any of the many things on my list :c9:
I’ll be honest I was just thinking about getting out of GRUME, but now I am staying.

Prep: Hot Shower/Amish beard oil
Razor: Rex Konsul XL Rhodium
Blade: Kai (2)
Cream: CF 1445
Brush: HLS Polished Titanium 2band finest WT badger
Lather Bowl: CC Obsidian
Alum Stick: Sprouts mineral block
Aftershave: FA Snake Bite
Quality: Slick BBS
Comments: head shave. Just terrible. Used Kai blade for the second time-big mistake…dull and catchy. Think I jumped too fast to my conclusion the first turn using it. Even then it was trailing second behind my all time favorite Rapira SS. But now, Kai is out in the garbage category for me. Got nasty nick on my head…had to switch to other blade to finish. Just terrible. Kai blade ruined it. Still got slick bbs though due to other items in my arsenal.
Rating: 4/10

Shave #5

Prep: N/A
Razor: Yaqi Sentinel Esqueleto
Blade: GSB (5)
Soap: TFS red bowl
Brush: Yaqi Matcha
Bowl: FA ceramic
Post-shave: N/A
Result: DFS in 3 passes + touch-ups

I meant to take my time and explore shallow-angle shaving today, but there just wasn't enough time to do a proper job of it. I'm finding that this razor does well on my throat and under my jawline, but going steep under my nose is underwhelming. It seems to have a wide usable angle and a narrow sweet spot.

I visited the big 4 London men’s grooming shops on Jermyn and St James Streets on Monday. Truefitt & Hill purchase, along with a few samples not included in the photo, confirms my decision to abstain from the March restraint. I’ve definitely overspent on this trip, good thing we head home tomorrow via Paris. I’ll be restraining for the rest of the year 😂

2nd March GRUME shave.

Today's shave was a bad one, but i was most of the problems.

Pre-Shave: Hot Shower with Stirling Soap Co. Deep Blue Sea Bar Soap.
Razor&Blade: 1959 Gillette Fatboy loaded with an ASCO Super Stainless Blade. A new blade that seemed to do a good job of mowing down my face fur but i felt fur after i finished. I also thought i had to do some buffing and did a bad job of it causing irritation and blood about the size of the Fatboy's head, alum helped stop the weepers.
Lather Gear: Yaqi 24mm Synthetic Mountain Lake, Captain's Choice Copper Aquamarine Bowl and @BigAlVista Sauvage IV Soap Puck. The lather i made it up in seconds and i only gave the puck a few swipes to get the smoothest/slickest lather i have used so far. I am terrible at trying to describe flavors/scents but it's a scent my sniffer got a sniff of and i wasn't knocked over by it and even after balming my face/neck i still got the scent of Sauvage IV.

The gear gets a 9.5/10 Sauvage IV boosts up the rating 1.5.

There is something classic yet refined that I love about Truefitt’s Sandalwood. Their take is my favorite.

I think I would have struggled and maybe bombed out looking for Hampshire Wool Fat soap and possibly a cache of contraband from Connaught’s

Safe travels home !

Day 5, 16.1% complete

Preshave: Hot washcloth
Lather: Saponificio Varesino Cubebe
Brush: Yaqi 24mm synthetic cashmere
Razor: GC1.05 SB, Al Handle, Astra SP #8
Bowl: Turkish copper
Post-shave: Nivea Balm

The combination of a smooth blade and the 1.05mm baseplate is hard to beat. I got an easy near-BBS.

The razor is fairly new to me and it's true that keeping a proper angle is a necessity with this razor. But it took me only two shaves to dial the razor in. Have a look into my journal for my detailed thoughts, here and here.

Thanks for the notes, @JAHE. If an AS-D2 shows up at the right sort of price, I might be tempted...

Thank you. I thought about Hampshire, however my Paris 🇫🇷 contraband from Planete Rasoir: the two new MdCs & SdM, and a TI straight, will more than suffice.

I'm still in this month's GRUME, but knocked myself out of the FFFMM by picking up a once-used Wilkinson that I had tried in the Yaqi Slope a while back, and bled for it! I unthinkingly replaced my FlyDear of 5 shaves with it... Only dawned on me as I was cleaning up after shaving what I'd done.

Anyway, it was a BBS finish, crazy relaxing shave, so all is not lost. Onwards and upwards!
