Looking for a hat...

I wear hats quite frequently and love straw fedoras, panama hats for the summer and fur felt fedoras for the winter. I am 24 so we are about the same age. If I can make one recommendation it is to make sure you try on any panama hat before buying as they can sometimes look a bit too aged for someone in their twenties. Another tip I can give you is to look on GQ's website as they have a feature on hats and matching types of hats to face shapes. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Good luck in your search

Yeah... I have noticed that a lot of hats, especially many styles of panama hats, look like they belong on an older man than myself. I wish there was a local store where I could try on different styles before buying, but regretfully there is not.

Try the Burlington Coat Factory. They tend to have a few different styles that you could try. I'm not sure of the quality of the hats, but at least you could get an idea of what you like on your head.

One word. Akubra.

And I'm not just saying that because I'm Australian.

This is pretty much the only brand of brimmed hats that Aussies will wear (except the occasional rodeo rider I've met, and they might wear a stetson... but not often) and we wear the fur felt hats all year around. And it does get slightly warm here.

They cost a bit but will last many many years, only getting better with age.

Thanks everyone.... you all have giving me a lot of ideas. Yesterday I took an old Bailey western hat from the 70s I was given and following some instructions on thefedoralounge.com converted it. It had moth damage, but a wide ribbon will cover that up. I cut the brim down to 2 1/2 inches and smoothed out the edges with a fat boy :w00t: . I then steamed it with a tea kettle and reshaoed the top into a teardrop shape from some pics online. Now all it needs is a ribbon!

All in all it has really turned out good and has shown me what I want in a hat. I now know that a hat with a narrow brim and especially a short height will look best on me. I will have to post pics once I find an appropriate ribbon and get it on, but I think it looks great for someone who didn't even have a hat in person to go by. I wish I had taken some before pics because the difference is incredible.

That's a pretty great idea, Andrew. Can't wait for the pics.

Not to sound too lazy, but could you post some links for the instruction? Sounds like something I might want to try, and I'm sure others might, also.

Here is a pics... I still need to clean it up some and change the ribbon to something wider. Like I said earlier, it was free so it is a learning project. It does have a lot of moth spots in it and stuff, but makes a good hat to learn on.
Here is a pic of one like it looked before I started, but mine was in very bad condition:

And here it is now:

The link where I found out how to do it is here...

Instead of the small plane I just used a fatboy cranked up to a high setting and an old derby blade... worked like a charm. Also I used a sanding block/sponge over the edges to smooth them out even more after that.

I wore it today and although its not really a looker, it wears good. Much more functional than it was before anyway...

Just wanted to give the heads up that I'll likely have a slew of hats for sale this coming weekend, everything from feds and pork pies to newsboys and a straw or two. Most are close to new - some even still have tags on them. All are L and XL, and I'll be pricing these to go.

Although I have acquired a couple more hats in the past week I am still up for more!! I look forward to seeing them. This site has spawned more ADs than I ever could have thought. I never knew how expensive browsing around could become... haha

I wouldn't mind a Tom Waits style pork pie... That would be cool. Don't know where I'd wear it, mind you.. But I still want one. :biggrin1:

Are you going to be selling on the BST or ebay or what?

What size are you. I just purchased a pork pie that I am scared is going to be a size to small on me and I can let go pretty cheap. It is a vintage fur felt hat with a rather wide ribbon. PM me with your size if you are interested.
