How many shaves to the bottom of the tub?

I have just started using my first Martin de Candre soap, and I've read about their longevity, but this is insane! Ten-fifteen swirls on a bloomed soap is all it takes to get enough for a 3-pass shave! So I asked in the daily shave thread and member @1e4 says he got 485 shaves out of his bowl, with no real effort to conserve.

I have not counted shaves before, but now I'm curious. Regardless of the initial cost, MdC really may be one of the most economical products out there. I don't get anywhere near that from a tub of Cella.

If you happen to know or think you can reasonably guess fairly accurately, how many shaves do you get out of a tub of Cella? A puck of Tabac? A tub of TOBS cream? I'm curious.

I'm just guessing, but I would guess 485 shaves would use up 5 tubs of Cella easily, but I don't know how accurate that is. This should be interesting.

man I wish I knew. I barely started in january and I have about 15-20 tubs. The one ive used the most is PAA blue moon bay rum. Thats with an every other day shave. Its the gift that keeps on giving. Ive seen people use proraso tubs for like a year but I dont know the shaving frequency. My best guess is 3-6 months depending on how much you shave and depending on how many different tubs you mix in. I know that before wet shaving I used a brush and a bowl to lather a concentrated shaving cream and the tubes would last me 4 months total before I had to restock. And before I used that a can of shaving gel would last me 3 months total with daily shaving.

You should check out the 3017 thread. A number of us, including myself, have “3017nd” a jar of MdC. Of course, there are many variables with soap usage including water hardness and type of brush. For myself, if I used a good quality synthetic brush from start to finish, I’ve no doubt I’d get 450 to 500 great shaves from a jar of MdC.

Credit where it’s due, the 485 shave count on a 200g MdC brain bowl came from @sm29 , when I asked about MdC longevity a while back. I only started counting shaves last year so I don’t have any accurate records on usage, but the last time I went all the way through a jar of MdC (it was a long time ago) it must have lasted somewhere in the range of 2 years.

Weigh the soap after it dries out and then weigh it again after 10-15 shaves when dry to get a reasonable ball park estimate of how many shaves you will realize. We've seen lots of fellow B&B members reporting a years worth or more in shaves from a 200 grams MdC indicating around a half gram of soap per shave.

Also, if it loads so quickly after blooming consider seeing how well it loads if the soap is dry.

How is the lather quality compared to your other soaps?

Edit, Just saw you earlier post on the shave so you can skip the last question. Glad the soap worked so well for you.

I am in year 3 of a Proraso red tub, which I alternate shaves with a tub of another product. I stopped counting shaves about six months ago and I was on shave 200 so I am guessing I can get about 400 with a third of the tub left. As a face latherer, I believe this practice is more efficient with the product, with minimal waste. That is about 2.5 cents per shave :)

Good question though.

Ask me about shaving naked!
I got almost 10 months out of a jar of MdC using a Simpsons Chubby and lathering with abandon.

Later on, using a more modest brush, I measured that that I could easily shave with 0.5g or even less. Half a gram/shave means 400 shaves from a 200g jar of MdC. But I could also work with a little bit less, so yeah, 400+ shaves is entirely reasonable.

And it’s a coconut oil soap, so you really don’t need to bloom it, it loads easily.

Pre de Provence is another strong contender for cheapest cost per shave. I don't have a proper estimate of how long a puck lasts but it's very economical for sure!
Agreed, haven't completed enough shaves to weigh usage yet by my current puck seem to lather in similar fashion to my other rock hard triple milled soaps where I use under a gram per shave. At the $12.40 Amazon Black Friday sale price for my backup puck we are looking at around 6-8 cents per shave if I use between 3/4 and 1 gram of soap per shave from the large 150 gram puck.

Hey John,
In 2021 I kept track and was able to get 90 shaves out of a tub of Proraso.

In 2023 I was introduced to Tabac (Tallow) and managed approximately 170 shaves out of a 150g puck.
I have two MdC jars on the go and will reply with exact numbers shortly.

Best wishes,
Paul
