How Many Shaves to the bottom of a Shave Stick?

Still haven't heard from Mike. The way he processes orders, I'm thinking it could be a week or so.

OH MY will it be a variation from Mike? If so this may be the ruin of me as I have been purposely avoiding his site in order to avoid adding SAD to my already flourishing RAD ahhhhh

At any rate hopefully a nice spring/summer scent

I've been wanting to order from Mike for a LOooooog time. But I haven't been able to order much of anything from anywhere until recently. I ordered 2 sticks. Whichever one SWMBO likes least will become the pass-around stick. But now I'm giving away my secrets. :tongue_sm

I'm in of course. I don't know what soap you are choosing, but my guess is 77. I just have a feeling.......... I suggest advertising in the "General Shaving Discussion" forum and mentioning a prize to drum up more interest. Also, I only want to participate once this pass. No seconds or thirds for me this time around.

Count me in on this!

Tex, I'm sorry, that's not allowed. You will be required to use the stick after each participant. :tongue_sm

Ollie the Palmolive Shave Stick, RIP. Not knowing the exact protocol for the bitter end (swallow it, viking funeral, smear it all over my body), I pressed the 'unusable' last portion into the top of my Williams puck, to live out his last days as he lived his first.

All total he was good for 11 final shaves with me.

Well done. I suppose customs for shave stick disposal vary from tribe to tribe. Some prefer cremation, others water burial. My own traditional practice is patterned after the Zoroastrian Dakhma, as pictured below:

Whatever our customs, at this time let us pause for a moment to remember Ollie and honor his life.

In another thread I remarked on those halcyon days, before truth in advertising laws sucked all the romance out of the business.

Back in 1907, Williams claimed you could expect 150 shaves from a stick.

My ca. 1940s-1960s vintage Williams sticks do seem to last pretty well: I have not been tracking weights, but I have yet to notice any change in size. Meanwhile my vintage Erasmic is wearing away quickly, at about 2/3-g per shave. Perhaps they were not in on this "how many shaves" advertising war. Colgate was, though. By 1924 their ad claimed a year of daily use as "not unusual" and made an even bolder claim of 551 shaves from one stick. That ad shows the Handy Grip, which took a stick of the same 28-mm diameter as today. It might have been a little taller, but not much.

Maybe the soap was formulated to last longer back then? I notice D.R. Harris sticks weigh in at 50-g, just like Speick and Palmolive. But the Harris stick pass ended up at 79. That still is not 152, much less 551.

I hardly dare whisper it, but do you suppose Colgate and Williams might have stretched the truth in their advertising? Surely not!

Note how specific the claims were: 152, not "about 150". As I understand it, folks are more credible of exact numbers.

What thread was that? I want to go read it.

On another note, it just came to mind that I have been a member of this forum for over five years and have a total post count of 2035 (2036 after this one I am writing). I am nearly down to an average of one post per day. I want to get my average below one post per day so that I don't feel like I have spent too much time discussing this wet shaving hobby of ours.

Oh gosh... I've only been a member since July, and I'm up to 2017! That's over 7 posts a day... what's that say about me!?

I would bet money that no Williams Shaving Stick would last 152 shaves. That would certainly be a bargain if it did.

Maybe if used by a gent who trims around his full beard, using a Wee Scot? Like the proverbial little old lady from Pasadena....

That funny-looking image at the top of the quote, that looks like a fast-forward icon, is a link to the original thread - in this case http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...ks-Review-Project/page6?p=4942389#post4942389. There was not much discussion, though. I think we all shrugged it off as advertising and went on with other things.

This year my goal is to stay under 5 posts daily. So far it has the unintended consequence that I spend a lot of time here, but reading instead of writing.
