Fatip Grande, My New Little Buddy

I went through the BOTOC thread some time ago and if I recall correctly the common theme was that some third party handles seemed to have problems with the chrome plated Fatip heads and in particular the Weber handles, but all (Chrome and Nickel) were OK on the Ikon handle. Probably something to do with the tolerances.

I have found that my Ikon Bulldog handle works fine on my nickel plated Fatip Grande.

My problem was with the Tradere handle and the Chrome Grande head, both nickel versions (Piccolo & Grande) worked fine.

Both of my Weber handles work fine with the Fatip head (Bulldog below). First time I tried the Bulldog it didn't work, but the second time was the charm. I just kept turning the handle until it was tight. This is one of my favorite head-handle combinations.

Now the razor is a looker AND a great shaver!

I use mine on the Tradere handle. A little long for my tastes, but it works pretty well. The weight of the Tradere is substantial. The FaTip is a very smooth shaver. Only tough spot is just under the nose, like Syngent said. My current favorite razor, for sure.

I haven't nailed my nose yet but I did manage to nick the top of my right ear with the tab headshaving.

What makes it a Fatip Grande? I have same one in Nickel that came in a Blue box with Italian writting on the box, are these also Grande ? If not what makes them Grande? I can't tell the differnece from mine to this Grande posted :eek:/

Grande vs. Piccolo, Grande handle is a bit fatter and heavier then the piccolo both are available le in either chrome or buckle, not sure if one is longer then the other

Actually, the Piccolo handle is heavier than the Grande, despite being smaller in diameter. I supposed that is due to the Piccolo being solid while the Grande is hollow.

It really is a great little razor, I am still trying to get used to it though, it really is an odd duck from my experiences. For instance, when I shave with the R41 (my go to) it feels raw while shaving, I'm sure many of you know what I mean. It's not uncomfortable but I can really feel the blade on my face, but in the end I have a perfect BBS with little to no irritation. On the other hand, the FaTip shaves uber smooth and comfortable, it doesn't feel like I'm scraping my face off and shaving doesn't feel as precarious as with the R41, after the shave I have a similar quality of shave but...I have quite a bit of irritation. I have no idea where it comes from, I've tried different blades, angles. I use no pressure of course, which is evident from the perfect shaves I get from the R41, which demands light pressure.

It just blows my mind how it shaves so smooth but leaves me burning.

yeah sound is really key with my old type, and i could hear this one much more, must be the hollow handle !, but its tough to get heptic feedback and can lead you to applying pressure to go looking for it, once your used to not really feeling the shave but seeing all that stuble in the sink lol its a really great little guy

This could be key for me, I might be using more pressure than I think. I'm using the nickle head on a Cooncat Bob BM Deluxe XL handle which is solid nickle plated brass and quite hefty, it's probably killing my feedback a bit.

its so easy to do, took my three shaves before i calmed down ( i was excited to get it) and payed enough attention to really watch my pressure and let the weight do the work, coming from an HD using astras it was quite the bump, once i got it though it became my favourite razor i never have any irritation with it now, the r41 from the members i see that love it works the same way you really need to let it do its thing too

its a rare blend of metals no one can trak down the date of it or who started it, even rarer then the darwin, gimme a week to make one up lol as antiques are made daily and we can talk about a trade lol

Jody, a lot of experiences open comb guys really like this razor, its what lead me to do the "okay now i have got to get me one of these" but it is loved for the shave it gives, not its perfect looks so keep that in mind, a few guys with the nickel plate complain that theres have little bubbles in the plate, though i didnt notice any in my chrome, its not on par with an EJ by anymeans, but it does a great job of removing whiskers the way i like it

So far my fleet of open combs consists of flea market/antique store Gillette New and Old types and a Merkur 25c. I love the quality of shave I get from them and looks are only a factor in driving down the price for me. For awhile I was finishing with a Tech, but lately its been some combo of open combs from start to finish.

Well hot Dang Vise, you are correct sir, turn a little further, back off and go back in, it just keeps going a little bit more each time, till it snugs right up, i sir am indebted to you indeed !

This is exactly the info I've been been trying to find. Fatip will now be ordered with confidence.
Thanks!

You are both very welcome. The Fatip-Weber Bulldog and Weber DLC-Classic are soaking up most of the love from me these days. My R41, Old Types, and MMOCs are looking a bit down around the jowls. (Not to worry, guys, I'll circle back to you, for sure.)
